What's your average speed?

This year I finally got a smart phone and started using a couple biking apps to track my rides, started with Mapmyride and switched to Sportypal as it seems to give better detail on the rides.

Anyways, I've come to find that it doesn't matter if I'm on a ride with a lot of hills or all flat but I seem to come in with an average speed of around 16.8mph. A few rides have been a little faster or slower but near 17mph seems to be my speed.

I don't ride with anyone but my wife and son so don't have much to compare to, anyone else want to share?

Here's the ride my son and I did this morning.

1) Strava.
2) Thank goodness you didn't start this thread in the 41.

13.8 mph, slower over long distances. I live in the mountains.

On my recumbent like around 10.5mph.

I'm not trying to win any races.

ijsbrand 08-25-13 12:45 PM

More depends on the wind, the temperature, and the route -- city traffic or not -- than my physical ability.

Michael Angelo 08-25-13 01:02 PM

Slow

daf1009 08-25-13 01:02 PM

I am with Zaphod...not trying to win races...just riding...about 14

roccobike 08-25-13 01:03 PM

14 to 17. Depends on riding partners, length of ride, terrain, type of equipment (vintage 27" or CF, Ksyrium roadie)
Oh, and how many dogs chased us.

Pretty much always right around 15. Miles divided by elapsed time from when I leave the house to when I return. I don't use a computer because then I'd start obsessing about it when riding.

dedhed 08-25-13 01:21 PM

Most of my riding is urban commute and averages around 13 over the course of the year. This will also include pushing the bike around at street fairs, riding with my daughter, slow cruise to the store etc. My computer does it on moving speed. I budget 10 for "real time" in the city.

That part of my Garmin data is still laughing.

SteveSGP 08-25-13 01:40 PM

I certainly wasn't intending any competition, just honestly curious what speeds others ride at. When I rode with Gomango a couple years ago he and I seemed to set about the same pace although he may have been riding slower than usual for my benefit, not sure.

I like the apps because it breaks down the rides for me and also tracks my riding so I can see how much I've been doing, my miles on the bike are way down this year compared to the last couple years so this will give me a baseline for the future.

After I passed through the Gamma Radiation Zone of the Savannah River Site today, I got Hulk strength. The first 30 miles were a lot of climbing. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=336849

Depends.

How long am I riding - 2 hours, 4, 6, 8?
How long/difficult was my ride the previous day.
Is it spring, summer, fall or winter?
What is the temperature?
Who am I ring with - solo, my wife, old fat guys, ex cat 1 guys?
How windy is it and which way is the wind in relation to the route?
How hilly is the ride?
Did I have a good bowel movement that morning?

Average could vary from 12mph to 25mph. I suspect if I rode the same way with the same people day to day i would give it up due to boredom.

tom25 08-25-13 01:49 PM

17-18 if hammering with friends, 15.5-17 solo, 10-12 riding with the family. Slower in the spring, faster in the fall.

I didn't start riding again until I was in my 50s. But the older I get the better my golf game used to be.

+1

the thread would be more derailled than the wreck of the Old 97.

Maybe 12? Dunno I haven't bothered to track average speed in years. I will get there when I get there. I am prone to amble when on a bike, I will start out with a destination in mind, and often get side tracked. Last trip to the grocery store 1.5 miles away took nearly 4 hours... I got lost... :P

When I had a longer commute and kept track of such things my average sat around 23 kmh / 14 mph... This is pretty consistent with what most commuters get who have kept track of things over long spans as stop and go traffic just slows you down.

If I am riding a century I plan to be out for 7 hours if it is a more leisurely affair, I do try and maintain an average speed of 30 kmh / 18mph.

cbresciani 08-25-13 02:26 PM

Somewhere around 16-17 when solo riding usually around 12-13 with the wife.

SteveSGP 08-25-13 02:26 PM

I'm lucky if I can find time to get in 20 miles at a time let alone a century, not sure my hands could deal with a century anyways.

Last couple years I commuted by bike but since moving closer to work I tend to just go out before work and get in a quick 6-10 mile loop and then drive the three miles to work since there's no real good route to get there anymore.

bike0enthusiast 08-25-13 02:30 PM

I read somewhere that the average for urban cyclists is about 10mph, and that's usually my average, especially on long rides.

Sixty Fiver 08-25-13 02:31 PM

My commuting speed has dropped to 5kmh on most days since I can walk... In this I don't move as fast as most and get dropped by little old ladies with walkers.

Heh Steve,

You caught me on a good day! :)

Nowadays, I adjust my speed to that of my partners.

I don't push people anymore.

This morning was too fast for me though. We were up before the sun and did a very long loop into the country.

Just under 71 miles all together.

Not so any steep climbs, but loads of long rollers.

Plus perhaps a few too many water breaks, as the heat index is well over 100 degrees here today.

All told, we were back in about six and a half hours.

.....and I havent made it off the couch since I returned.

Edit: When we buzz around town here on the racing bicycles, we usually are in that 18-20 range.

jimmuller 08-25-13 02:58 PM

I managed 56.5 miles on the Masi today. I recorded the trip on my GPS (which don't usually do) and it reported a moving average of 14.5mph. We rarely go over 13 on the tandem.

But the thing is, the numbers are dominated by the time you spend going less than your cruising speed, such as negotiating busy intersections and town centers, parking it at a lunch stop, slowing for pedestrian crossing the road, climbing steep hills. If you get lucky and hit none of that stuff your average will be higher.

lostarchitect 08-25-13 03:03 PM

I also am not racing anybody--not even myself. Most of my riding is in the city, so there's a lot of stop and go. I usually average 12-13mph over a ride. On the flats I usually cruise at 16mph or so.
