I don't find modern Shimano attractive at all...to me that crank looks bulbous and unattractive. As far as riding it, I'm sure it works well...my 105 9 sp performs as it should and it's great value.

ColonelJLloyd 08-29-13 09:13 AM

I think you need better pics.

cyclotoine 08-29-13 09:48 AM

I think your bike it probably lighter and you enjoy riding it more. THat is awesome.

bradtx 08-29-13 10:03 AM

abrownlths, I don't have a problem with bringing an older bike into the 21st century with a new group. Bicycles are made for riding and whatever enhances the experience is good, IMHO. The purist/collector won't see it that way, but the bottom line is it's your bike to do with what you wish.

Better photos?

Brad

Yeah...I know but I like the mix between new and old..anyways the new specs is a new 5700 groupo with a new wheel set...and new jagwire celeste housing and cabling..the 105 pedals are on the way aswell....

Lascauxcaveman 08-29-13 10:40 AM

Well, since you asked, I think it's kind of ugly.

But if you saw some of my bikes, you'd know I've no right to complain about things like that :)

Nice choice on the polished A23's! I'm building some up for myself today.

I agree. I think that modern shimano cranks in particular look like ass.

LexKing 08-29-13 10:52 AM

Better pictures would help to get the full concept. Your bike looks pretty good, from what I can see. My opinion really should make no difference, since it is your bike and if you like it - then that is all that really matters. Ride it and enjoy it!

abrownlths 08-29-13 10:57 AM

Thanks for the opinions...

andyfloyd 08-29-13 11:06 AM

That newer 105 crank looks horrible. I do prefer the more sleek look of the older cranks, because the spider on the 105 cranks is just too fancy looking or something it just doesnt look right. But thats my opinion and as long as you like it go for it.

rccardr 08-29-13 11:10 AM

I bet it rides as well as anything you could buy off the floor today for two grand (or maybe more since I don't really keep a close eye on what full 105 equipped bikes are selling for these days).

Visually, I prefer an older spider-style crank like the ones that came on Ultegra 6600 but still used an external bearing BB, but then it's your bike. Nice job!

LOL, yes.

Modern 105 is one of the best values out there....I kind of like the crank but WTF do I know.

I think it looks fine. When I sometimes consider my preference for older, spider-looking cranks, I contemplate the increased speed in micro-micro-mph of the stiffer, lighter crank and better power transfer without the ball bearings and spindle.

Over time, the increase in speed will allow you to have the time to eat one more donut at a rest stop.
And that's a good thing.

My first impression, should I walk up to it and realize it's too big to ride and therefore not one to steal, is "nice frame, nice new group, bet it rides very nicely."

And that's my opinion. We all have them. Cool build. Show it in the STI/Ergo thread and ride away, ride away.

elboGreaze 08-29-13 06:42 PM

Very nice , I like it ... But need to post better photos.

mapleleafs-13 08-29-13 06:56 PM

If you want an honest opinion i'm not a big fan of the look. I"m sure it functions amazing but the crank and derailleurs are hideous. Sram red would even look better in a case like this. I'm not saying this cause i'm a "purist" but if you invested that much money into a group. Why not go 8 speed Shimano Dura Ace if you want brifters and a decent amount of cogs. Sure it may not be 10speeds or so, but do you really use all those cogs. My 8 speed dura ace is friggin amazing!!! it looks smooth and never misses a shift and looks awesome to me.
