Can I use these Shifters on 1989 Cannondale

the shifters on my 1989 Cannondale 3.0 Mountain bike work but they are worn out so I need to replace them. I do not have to have the originals (they have a special tang that attaches to the brake lever housing rather than strapping onto the handlebars. Most modern Shimano shifters I've seen tonight attach to the handlebars and I think that will work for me but I'm nto sure which ones will work with the Shimano Mountain LX derailer set.

These are the shiftesr that's on the bike now ...

Will these work ...

ALSO, what does that F ------- SIS lever do ?

The lever is for friction or index mode shifting. Those thumbies should work okay, but you may find a whole replacement Deore lever/shifter combo for ony a few bucks more, with patience.

Those ones on ebay appear to be six speed model. Although seller claims they are 6/7 speed, I am not aware of this option. 6 speed spacing is different than 7 speed.

This is all I use on MTBs, flips and family bikes (I rarely flip mtbs anymore). If your existing shifter is integrated with the brake lever, you need to do some cutting. Although they are cheap, they work well: https://www.amazon.com/Shimano-Shifte...ourney+shifter

Sure, they'll work - in friction mode only, though. You may lose a gear if you buy the generation 1 Deore shifters you have listed and you stay with the indexing.

Your best bet is to try and locate some Deore II or Deore XT 7-speed thumbshifters at eBay - preferably the latter. They won't be cheap, but they will be a substantial upgrade to the LX shifters, and period-correct.

See - https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...hifters&_rdc=1 for more details.

Cannondale used thumb shifters for a reason. They work, and they have friction mode selectable from the bars. It's an important consideration for those of us that ride in the woods here in PA. "They work" isn't something you can say about Shimano's RapidFire push-push shifters of the same era. Those were a complete pain-in-the-ass, as it was often possible to upshift when you wanted to downshift. Also, they were hell-on-wheels to keep tuned and shifting properly - and if they broke, well, Shimano said "buy some new ones, baka!".

FWIW, I bought a 3.0 Cannondale last week. Could be a late 89 or a 90. The shifters were not working. I opened them up, cleaned them out, tightened them up, added a little lubrication, and now they're good as new. Maybe you can fix yours instead of replacing them. Worked for me.

Upgrading time?

I bought these for a MTb I had to work on, they were pretty cheap. Not thumbies but better:

I've always heard the SIS stuff is compatible with itself. My 6sp Deore thumbshifters have the "ghost click." I read of that click having the capability of another gear. Haven't tried it though.
