Great find, man! I vote for a local bike shop, too. Maybe call a couple and ask if they've got experience dealing with older road bikes. I was lucky enough to find one in the city where the mechanic not only had experience working with older bikes, he knew (and appreciated) the old French bike I brought in. When you've found the shop, it'd be worth asking them to fix the dropout/derailleur issues and give you a general tune-up, that won't set you back too much money.

For a good cheap tire to start out with I recommend Bike Tires Direct, the Kenda K35 is a decent durable inexpensive road tire. Or you could ask the bike shop how much to get you on the road if they do all the work for you. Once the bike is in running condition, just work on maintaining the bike as it needs stuff, you'll gradually get better and better fixing your bike and feel more confident in doing what it needs.

Enjoy riding!

I agree with all the advice you are getting. Hope you enjoy the bike.

I stand corrected. BTW I'm working on getting you a decent rear D that'll work on your bike. (gratis)

Honestly, when I usually post things to forums, people don't respond as much or don't even bother looking...but this forum has blown me away...people I don't even know are giving me great advice, just pushing me to start riding as fast as I can but doing it the right way...this is amazing and i'm speechless...when I hit that first street or trail on my new bike, In the back of my head i'm going to be thanking you guys...I had no idea where to start and you guys lead the way! Thanks so much!

It depends on where you look. Pricing for Cyclone, Superbe and VGT and VX rear derailleurs are all over the place on eBay. It's often easier to get Superbe at low prices right now than it is to get VX or VGT-Luxe, or Cyclone for that matter.

When I was building up the PX-10 I managed to locate a Superbe Pro late model rear with anodized alloy pulleys for under $30 USD delivered to the doorstep. Maybe that's rare, but Superbe derailleurs come up for sale on eBay and Craigslist on a regular basis. They're well worth the cash outlay - lighter than Dura-Ace and nearly as durable.

The VGT-Luxe and Vx were literally superb.
Yes, they were. Mai Waifu's mixte has the VX derailleurs and they have a feel that is just about perfect in friction mode. They worked better than the Euro competitors (except Simplex) at far lower cost. It's a shame Maeda went under and that they never figured out index shifting until it was too late.

This forum is indeed the best. And the C&V subforum is one of the most active and friendly parts.

The bike that got me back into riding was a $40 Panasonic. Ten years later I rode a century on it -- 100 miles! Cycling is absolutely a part of the maintenance of my health and happiness.

Your the greatest man...even if you don't find anything, i'll always remember this for, honestly, the rest of my life. This is a bump in the road in my life and getting on a bike is the one thing I never imagined that would get me over this bump.

$40 Panasonic? Haha it's great to see that people have started from the bottom. I was afraid my bike wasn't going to do the job but with a little elbow grease it's going to get there!

OK, I found an older Zeus Criterium group you can have, but I need to know if it'll fit your bike. (experts please chime in now) I'll wait for the experts before I ship, hopefully they'll let us know soon as I'd like to get this out to you sooner.

Hey listen, I honestly could not thank you enough for even thinking of doing something like this. I went to my LBS today and they had a couple old derailleurs laying around that fit the bike. But I really wanted to thank you, for really trying to help a stranger out...it's rare people like you...I hope the good karma comes back to you!
