1960s Atala
My latest addition - a stunning 1960s Atala road racer in remarkable condition:
Currently I'm in the process of cleaning, the bike obviously hasn't seen a wash for decades... *shudder* Grime and dirt seem to be good preservers though, will post more as I progress, if there's some interest...
From the head badge alone, can anybody narrow down potential production dates already?

Thank you
Where was the serial number located on your bike? I just found one on the top right hand side of the seat tube, quite unusual location - it starts with '70...'

Nice bike.
Brakes on mine are Mafac Racer, front and rear derailleurs are Campagnolo (Valentino or Gran Sport), high flange hubs are labelled "Normandy" (never heard of those before), strange crank set without visible brand name, freewheel / cog set by G. Caimi, etc. Will add pictures as I progress.

Frame when I purchased it.
Wow.... really nice wheel. You are going to have a great time rebuilding that frame, because you have most of the main components. I had to start from scratch, as I had to rebuild the BB, Top Set, Brakes, and the rest of the components to original parts that were used on this model.

That's what amazed me when I saw it - the bike was in quite neglected and sorry condition, yet complete, and as far as I see only the saddle isn't original.

Ah yes, you are right, just found them on velobase (https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.as...4-91f8e0143d26). Many thanks for correcting that!
Strange to see so many French parts on that bike. As far as I know my particular one here had never left Italy (that's also where I got it).

The french hubs do seem out of place, entirely possible that the wheels are non-original, later replacements.

Does anyone have an idea who the manufacturer of the crankset could be? I have taken some better pictures:
There is no engraving, logo or anything. I couldn't find them on velobase. Some Magistroni cottered types look quite similar.

I love finding older bikes in this type condition for rebuilding fixing up some original parts just can't be easily found and a specific to the bike. There seems to be at least one part on vintage 60'-70's road bikes that is somewhat specific to the bike that if it's not there can be a serios pita. I much prefer bikes that are basically original and complete a projects. I will take a bike that is rough as hell if the paint and chrome are semi decent that is complete over a much nicer looking bike that is bit of frankenbike any day.

This is a nice looking colourway, it should make for a nice bicycle. The components are similar to those on the 72 Bottecchia Special I owned. The MAFAC brakes are different, my Botty had Universal brakes on it and the rims were a knurled steel, your aluminum are better quality I would think. The crank set is the same and the RD/FD were Valentino, on the Bottecchia. I seem to remember that Atala and Bottecchia had some connection, one of the knowledgeable members here could address that as well as the actual pedigree of you Atala. Randyjawa's site has some information on these makes, maybe he will give you some input here.

Great looking bike! I really like the simplicity of the older steel crank sets, so much "thinner" and open.
