Ebay: Final value fees on shipping?

Can someone tell me how to avoid final value fees on shipping on Ebay? I generally charge low rates, and the final value fees normally push the shipping into the red.

I'm not complaining about the final value fees on shipping, but I want to know how to get around them.

Raise your price to offset the fees.

You can't. Raise your price or add a handling fee.

Yeah, what they said.

My elderly dad (91!) was accidentally charging a $20 handling fee on all his auctions. Surprisingly, it didn't seem to hurt his sales. One Item sold for $24 with the $20 handling fee.

Once I made him aware of what was going on, he issued refunds.

The only way to avoid "Final Add Value Shipping Fee" is to have "Free Shipping" per Ebay Representative. Unfortunately, when shipping International, the shipping varies and may cost ton's of money. Ebay says the purpose is to insure Buyers better experience. I mentioned to the Ebay person that the inventory is not Ebay's, but the sellers and the answer was "so what". In my terms I mention that shipping includes all materials (purchasing bike boxes and packing material), and "Ebay's Value Shipping Fee". Since Ebay started to charge "Value Added Shipping Fee", you can now charge as much as you want without the possibility of having your item de-listed.

Their business, their rules. If you decide to overcharge shipping to compensate, you will get flamed eventually.

On smaller/lighter items I usually offer free shipping in the US.

Anymore I usually just go buy it now free shipping and adjust my price up to compensate.

My shipping is always in the red. Adjust your price!

i call it the Amazonization of the Internet. Buyers expect and get free shipping. Most of my items with free shipping bring more than similar items that charge for shipping. The higher auction prices more than compensate me for the shipping.

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.

I've recently started offering free shipping. I will ship only to the continental US. I set a high starting bid which will cover the shipping plus some more.

On local purchases, I have asked prior to the auction end about local pick up. Works well for bicycles, saves fret, and cash. Does cost a bit in time and fuel, but almost always the safer deal from the buyer's perspective.

The add on shipping value fee by ebay is just a revenue enhancement for them. The benefits of a virtual monopoly. I am really surprised the Yahoo has not cloned the software they use in Japan for auctions in the USA market, decent name recognition, it would not take much initially to undercut the 'bay and get added revenue for themselves.
