Motobecane Headset stack height?
 

I'm on a late 70s Moto Mirage. Changed the headset out six months ago, but the SL P3, was a bit to high and I had to machine it down. I'm wondering if anyone knows the stack height that fits these frames? I'd love a Campy headset, but could settle.

Also, I measured the old crowns and stacks, top seems to be 25mm (not including brake dropout ring), bottom is 20mm. Does that sound right?

I measured. Headset I have on (SL something or rather) is 31mm with brake shoe. Does anyone make a headset that short?

The only one I know of with a 31mm stack height is the DuraAce HP-7600...make sure of your measurements, don't just measure twice, make it 3 or 4 times and use a digital caliper and follow good instructions (like Sheldon or Sutherlands) so you know you're right. If you are then that's a very short stack and probably NOT done with the original fork at factory for the stock HS. AFAIK all the Stronglight HS were from 34.0 (P3) to 40.7 (Delta). Campys are all going to be in the 39 to 40 range except for a Pista which still is over 31.

I believe that the Tange Passage headset has a stack height of 30 or 31 mm. And you can get a new one for around $15.

True that^, the Passage was not a model listed in my Sutherlands, but it's supposedly 30.2mm stack ht. and like other Tange HS quite a bargain. Problem will be if you need French threading, I don't think Tange makes the Passage in FR, but you might get away with swapping all the lower stack and the upper race of the Passage and re-using your FR top cup and lock nut...maybe...it occasionally works out.

Or remove the cups, twist 90 degrees and re-insert. Use loose balls.
