I've decided to become a snob...Conversions with RD hangers suck! Wanna ride fixed gear? Get something with track ends or Chater Lea dropouts....Wanna do it right, make sure it's got eyelets for fenders too and hang a bell on it......if it ain't British and ain't been through a war, something's wrong with it :notamused:

Whew, found my coffee cup....here's a nice blog site for posting your fixie http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/

41x15. Yes, I know 41 is a weird size but I bought it as part of a misguided attempt to make a magic gear FG road bike conversion. But it is a pretty good quality ring and since it's on my SSCX bike I am not too concerned if it gets chewed up.

I'm a snob's snob, ride a Pogliaghi Pista on the track... and prefer a pint of bitter or a nice single malt.

Thanks! Sadly, the dog was on short-term loan from my sister. He's a sweetheart though.

Snobs rejoice! Fortunately there is one builder who knows what's what.
A modern Path Racer can be ordered bespoke, built to your exact specs w/ track ends, mudguard fittings and whatever doo-dads are required. Long live Blighty! http://www.merciancycles.co.uk/frames/57/frame-builder "Mercian Cycles began in Derby in 1946 and are still building bespoke lightweight steel frames, by hand, using traditional frame-building methods with one craftsman building each frame from start to finish." -Bandera |
Whether you choose to call them fixed gear or "fixie", are they really such a mark of honor and wisdom and maturity and sophistication?
After all, most of the wheelchair geezers in Wal-Mart could be said to riding fixies... |
Yes, but only the British ones...why aren't you following this?

It is a simple, elegant and efficient style of cycling pared of the excess of modern appliances. Try it. -Bandera |

"Pogliaghi Pista", it sounds like a like hearty Tuscan meal in a comfy tratoria. -Bandera |
Built one Fixed Gear bike and spent some time riding another. Fixed Gear bicycles are not for me.
I like the option of multiple gearing. I love, absolutely love, the feel of freedom, as I coast down, across, and even up sometimes. Anyway, each to his own and, for what it is worth "dude" or "dudette", I prefer much of the younger generation's language, when compared to Shakespear's old and flowery manner of speaking, and writing. Of course, that is just me. All that said, each to his own. Personally, I don't criticize the other guy, or gal, for being the way they are. |
Well said!

The beater is a converted Peugeot AO8... 52:20 gearing for 70 gear inches on 630:25 tyres.

"uncompromised by multiple gears or the slacker’s ability to coast."
All my bikes have triple cranksets. If coasting makes me a slacker, slacker I am. At the bike coop, single speeds and fixies pretty much just sit there until we either price them at a crazy low level or convert them back to multiple geared bikes. And this in a college town. We won't let the volunteers build SS/fixies any more, it's a waste of mechanic time. |

It's been traditionally a training tool for club riders and an activity for the nostalgic and will revert to those no doubt. I've kept at it for years because I like it but I'm also fitting a triple to my rando-ish build this winter. Horses for courses as they say. -Bandera |
