Schwinn Paramount PDG 2
Just picked up a mint PDG 2 with 500EX, low usage, rides super smooth. The frame is Tange OS, fully lugged, red paint scheme. Thinking about upgrading to a full ultegra 6700 gruppo and 10 speed setup, 28-11, as a trainer because the ride is truly remarkable.
Alternatively, found 600EX 6 speed derailleurs that are new, and would be period correct, for reasonable cash.
Has anyone fully upgraded these frames with a good result?

I upgraded a 1994 Paramount with Chorus 11-s components three years ago for a riding buddy, and he loves it. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't have good results upgrading an early nineties Series 2 frameset.

I have a 1992 Series 5 and Series 7, and upgraded both of them. For personal use, its a winner.
IMHO, Schwinn under equipped the entire Paramount Series line. My theory is they wanted to keep the pressure off their Waterford Paramount bikes. All of them are more than worthy of better drive components.
The key to upgrading bikes from this era is finding a deal on the components. All of my component sets were picked up used, most from donor bikes.
Series 7 built up with a mix of DA 7400, DA 7700, and even an Ultegra crankset. For personal use, I do not get concerned with mixing groups (as long as they play well together).
Anymore, on STI bikes, I have standardized keepers to either 8 speed 6400 or 8 speed 7400 (DA). I like the aesthetics of these groups, 8 speed STI are rebuildable, and 8 speed cassettes and chains are cheaper than the higher speed stuff. I've got one 9 speed bike right now, which I will probably eventually change over to 8 speed 6400.
1992 Series 5, mostly Tricolor 600 STI (8 speed):
On the used market, the stuff is out there. I bought a tricolor set, including STI, off Indianapolis C/L (I was passing through the area on the way to Illinois), $135. Not the deal of the century, BUT working 8 speed 6400 STI are routinely going for that or higher on ebay. And I got derailleurs, crankset, brake calipers, etc....

I suspect your bike looks like mine. I have this 1992 PDG OS2 and a 1974 P10-9 and bought them 1 week apart in 1999. I think this one was ridden once or twice and hung in a barn from 1992 to1999. Took about 3 hours to clean it up. Very nice riding bike and worth doing whatever you want to do with it. Roger

I've run 9sp 105 and 8-sp 600 tricolor on the red OS-2 frameset, with good results. The OS tubing rides nicely, the fork is a winner, and the geometry just fine. The OS frames are (IMO) underrated, which is fine with me, in case I want another.
