"8 of 9" Cassette with 7 speed friction?

I have an '86 Cannondale which has 126mm hub spacing. It currently has a 7 speed cassette and was thinking of running an 8 or a 9 speed cassette a la Sheldon Brown's "8 of 9" or "9 of 10." Could I continue to use my 7 speed shifter seeing as I run it in friction mode anyways?

Yep, you can use a friction (mode) shifter on just about anything.

As long as you don't have to "Coldset" the frame, aluminum does NOT like that.....
