The first thing I learnt when I attempted to line the lugs on my Atlantis was that my wife was much better at it than me.
My wife's work: Mine: Otherwise, regarding the OP's questions, I think either red or cream or even gold would look good but I would echo Gaucho777's comment about matching the red. Also, rootboy's comment about being careful to keep the line thin - the line on the BB above is quite ugly, IMO, but it doesn't stop me loving the bike :) I used a fine brush, as did my wife… which just goes to show it's the craftsman, not the tools :D One piece of advice - think ahead. Go over each lug with just a paint-less brush before actually painting. This will help you work out the best angle to hold you bike at in order to be able to go all the way, or where to rest you hand with the brush in it. |

I like to outline the lugs.
I've used a paint pen with a very fine metal looking tip that I liked as the paint stays on the tube and not the lug. But it can stop flowing so easy. Sort of a one bike deal. Best to buy a new one rather than letting it sit. I've also used the type that is more of a marker type tip. It flows well but leaves a fatter line that gets more on the tube and the lug. I don't care for it as much that way. I tried black and it didn't look so great, so I tend to stick with gold. Some bikes that have come through my stable. Some lining by me, a few factory examples. |
The windows on the lugs of my Trek 400 are shaded in with the head tube color. It wasn't until seeing this thread that I thought of outlining the lugs with the same color silver.
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/2647/dec2010003.jpg I've long considered doing the lugs on my dark blue 78/79 Trek 736 in gold. I even bought a paint pen, but hesitated when I've read of mixed results in using paint pens. I'm not the most artistic of people with a pen/brush. I mean, more like "I have problems staying in the lines- not in a creative sort of way." |
