+10 I will pick up ANY bike in the trash, and either donate to my favorite thrift store, the local co-op, or refurbish it.

I used to audit landfills in my job as a factory manager. It is disgusting here in the USA the amount of recyclable/reusable stuff that ends up in the landfill. Drive south in Florida on I 95, all of a sudden you see a freakin mountain. In Florida no less. Huh? There are no mountains in Florida. Then you realize, its a damn landfill.

Hopefully Holland is a lot better in this regard.

LoL, you guys don't dissappoint in the reactions.

We're pretty clean in this regard. No land to fill, so few landfills. I bet it found a good home, or else found it's way to fixie converter. There are a few in my 'hood.

i realize I broke a few codes, I had better fixed this bike up for a bikeless friend to draw one more sheep into the fold.

Something like that happened to me recently, and I left it there. A very decent road machine with flat, ruined tires, missing saddle blah blah. The question passed through my mind, "What if it really isn't just dumped?" And then I remembered the last time I passed through a police roadblock that was checking bicycle serial numbers and license registration tags. (They do that here; bicycle theft gets more national attention than leaking nuclear reactors.)

And I am not 'cured' :)

Aero Columbus Zeta tubing and Benotto branded Modolo and Ofmega components. No lock or anything, just thrown out. Judging by the rotted tires it probably came of an attic of some sorts.

There was a lot of rust and the chrome in bad shape, but nothing a little elbow grease can't fix. I left it there.

What's wrong with me? When I got home I found myself making ridiculous excuses to myself, like "have another guy have a bit of luck" and "nah, I got plenty bikes already". I even got so far as admitting to myself that I can't miss the cash for new tires, an OA bath, cables and brake pads! Am I cured?

What is WRONG with you? Did you switch to decaf coffee? Snap out of it man! Good thing you are on the other side of the Atlantic or I would have to pay a visit and smack some sense into you with a Zefal frame pump. The only bikes I ever see parked out with the trash are bottom-of-the-barrel mountain bikes with taco'd wheels.

LOL :)

No decaf here. Matter of fact, I switched to making my coffee C&V Italian style with a Bialetti moka pot. Great coffee.

This story reminds me of the scene in "Flying High" where all the passengers in an plane are lined-up to slap the face of an hysterical woman.

Even I want to join this line (haha).

I'm sure you've reserved a place in heaven though. I'm just as sure it would have been found by a poor deserving person (of a similar height to you) and given them a new lease of life.

Me personally - I'd have picked it up in a heart beat - look out hell, here I come.

Was that what the movie was called in Australia? Interesting. We know it as "Airplane".

The desire to aquire can ebb & flow. It will come back when the right bike finds you. I recently picked up 2 craigslist bikes to tinker on and flip. I knew I would not keep either but wanted to spend some time wrenching etc. My riders are all pretty much done at the current time. You'll be back!

Next thing you know, you'll be saying "Screw it. I'm leasing a Hyundai."

Yes - if I remember correctly - there were a few in the series.

Lucky you. I have had only one dumpster find. An early Ross mtb built for someone TALL. A few days after I fixed it up a homeless guy on the corner needed new tires for his crap wal-mart bike. I went home, threw the Ross in the truck and took it to him. Best part? He's 6'7"! It fit him like a glove and still see him almost every week riding it around. It's the gift that keeps on giving :)

this too is a sweet act of compassion that also allows the giver to enjoy his gift. bravo.
