What would you do?

I have a 1985 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe. I have replaced the bars, stem, levers and rear derailluer. The 27" wheelset needs replacing. It wears new gatorskins.

If I convert to 700c, I'll have to replace the original dia compe canti brakes with something that has some adjustment room.

If this was your dilemma, would you buy 27" or 700c wheels for the bike?

I like 27" tires just fine on a 1981 Super Sport. I think there are enough decent tires available and they're less expensive than the 700c counterparts for some reason.

I would probably keep it 27". Sometimes the cantilever posts are only 65mm apart instead of 80mm or so like more modern ones so newer cantilevers might not work if you change the brakes. I ran into that problem on a bianchi randonneur and a miyata 1000 that I still have is also got narrow canti post spacing so I'm stuck with 80s brakes on it.

Stay with the 27", in my opinion.

I agree; stay with 27" wheels. Decent quality 27" rims and tires are still widely available.

For what it's worth go with the 27's. That wheelset looks good.

JJPistols 09-28-13 07:12 PM

I was leaning towards keeping it 27, I think I'm leaning a lot harder now. Thanks, y'all.

If the 27's you have are true no issues keep the 27's for this bike even with upgraded replacent wheels new or used I would go with 27's on this bike no size issues and good 27's plentiful wheel and tire wise and actually a bit cheaper.

CrankyFranky 09-28-13 07:27 PM

Stay with 27" IMHO - unless you want to burn some unwanted money. There's still reasonable rims 'n tires out there. Not a huge variety, but enough.
