And yeah, I've still got a Nuovo Record RD in a box for about 30 years now.......Just in case I need it for some late '70s period correct build someday if I come accross something appropriate. But I'm really spoiled on better performing derailleurs.

$50 is the going rate, no? I've a set I'll sell you for $50 shipped, but cosmetically they ain't perfect.

The "new" Shimano 105 indexed group.
Cheap, light, pretty, and still useful today.

+1 on the Flite.

Suntour Cyclone Mk II derailleur. Replaced one with a Nuovo Record my LBS had, then spent a couple years trying to convince myself it was better. It wasn't.
In terms of truly underrated hardware, this. Possibly the niftiest friction derailleur I've had the pleasure to use.

Sun CR18 Rims, those who know, know what I mean.

7 to 8 speed thumbshifters Suntour XC Expert and XC Pro and Shimano Deore and Deore XT.

Shimano Deore rear derailluer.

Old cantilevers, Shimano wide styles, Suntours XC Pro.

SRAM (not Avid) and Koski V-brakes

Sugino cranks, all of them.

If they are like the ones in my current avatar you could probably get twice that much for them.
And no, I'd better hold off buying anything else for awhile. I just set my mortgage payment back a month when I bought an '83 Trek 970 frame from a forum member. Besides, I've since bought some Campy retro friction shifters which are said to be almost as smooth and a bit more break-proof. I can't really afford to hoard right now but thanks.

American Classic seat posts. Simple, strong & plenty light. No real need for CF. ;)

I've got one of these NOS in the box. I'm thinking of building a bike around this beautiful derailleur.

Stronglight A9 headset.

Early Dura Ace hubs... especially the freewheel rear hubs.

Many people won't buy them because they've been convinced that they MUST have 10- or 11-speed cassettes. I buy DA hubs that haven't been abused... rebuild with grade 25 stainless bearings... and those things roll buttery smooth forever. They're cheap and a pleasure to ride.

spacemanz 10-04-13 08:12 PM

Silca pumps, floor or frame.

Cinelli Black Quill Stems.. 100mm+

GrayJay 10-04-13 10:52 PM

my vote for underrated is for 7-speed casettes & freewheels. The +5mm widening of the cogs needed for a 8/9/10 speed cassette makes the rear wheel dishing more extreme, seriously weakening the rear wheel. I gladly give up an extra cog or 2 in order for a stronger rear wheel....

Too true. I put one on my Ron Cooper when they first came out (1981 I believe). Last year it broke at the welds as I was riding along a bumpy road. I seemed to remember that it had a lifetime warranty so I wrote an email to Blackburn and they sent me another almost identical one. Making good on the warranty of a 32 year old part is the sign of a good company I'd say.

Been using them since the 80's. Nicely made, simple, light and strong.
So good that they never had to do any changes to the design since the 80's and was copied by hundreds of other makers. You can buy a brand new one today and put it on a 30 year old C&V bike and it will look period correct.
I'll take it any day over those "Ciussi" cages with the fancy buttons on them....

Yeah, light, works great, and lasts forever. You don't see them on many bikes...I guess people don't know what they're missing.

Apparenty he's proved it's....bar tape.

I've had a beautiful set of campy retro frictions for years but missing the back plates! They are unique to the doppler's too! They have a raised section... impossible to find spares.

Yes they are like the ones in your avatar but likely not as good condition. I have tried to sell them for said price for a while. No takers.

Kyokuto "Pro-Ace" road pedals. These were pretty much exact copies of the venerable Campagnolo Record road pedals, right down to the rifling on the pedal axles, grond and polished bearing races, strap loop on the cage, lovely satin anodized body and durable chrome plated cage. It seems people confuse them with the KKT "Top Run" pedal, which is a much cheaper (in every sense) model.

Not really "vintage" but I know what you mean. The CR-18 is a good value, and available in many different diameters, finishes, and spoke drillings.

Nice. I just had one of those break last week, after several decades of use. Good to hear they'd replace it, although I wonder if they'd match the custom blue powercoat the factory used on mine to match the blue "Bike Ribbon" bar tape...

Well now that explains why my set has regular flat back plates with washers JB welded onto them

Since they came from across the pond I'll just hang onto them to see if that setup works. I'm not sure why it wouldn't yet even if the JB weld doesn't hold up. If they won't play right I've got some NOS Triomphe shifters for backup.
