campy shimano compatable

I have an 1988 or 1999 bianchi Trofeo with campy mirage 8 speed brifters mated to a shimano 8 speed cassette and the chain is starting to skip a bit my question is will a campy cassette fit on my current hub or will it need replaced and do I need a Mirage specific cassette. Thanks

You have shimano wheels on it? I am pretty sure a Campi cassette will not fit on that freehub. Considering the cost of a campi V shimano cassette you likely better off just replacing the shimano cassette.

Any Campi 8spd free hub would be compatible.

A Campy cassette wiil likely not fit on your hub. Campy and Shimano have different cassette freehub bodies that are not compatible. It is very likely you have 8sp Shimano type casette with Campy spacing.

There's a good chance your Mirage shifters and RD were working OK with the 8-sp Shimano cassette, on obviously Shimano/SRAM compatible wheels, because the 2 8-speeds tend to play together. There's enough "slop" in the spacing differences and chain width to accommodate them.

However, when the chain or cassette starts to wear, the compatibility suffers, and you start to see issues such as you have.

Rather than speculate on new wheels, etc, I'd simply do the certain thing, and get Wheels Mfg 8-sp Campy spacers for any Shimano 8-sp cassette. It's about $60 for the kit. Then you can take advantage of good deals on 8-sp cassettes from Shimano, SRAM, etc, use the Campy spacers, and continue to ride your Trofeo. It will shift better than ever. $60 on the spacers, $30 on the cassette, $20 on a chain, and you're good to go, and never have to worry again, just keep using the spacers when you put thousands of miles on the Trofeo.

My work here is done. Think long term. Ride on.
