Guys,
I'm building up a nice old Peugeot, and was looking at a Campy Super Record bottom bracket. A few questions:
. Are these worth the $140-$250 they sell for on ebay?
. What is a good, less expensive alternative people love (I know it's subjective)?
. Why do some of them have protruding threads from the spindle? What cranks fit that?

Pricing: Depends on how bad you want or need them. There are alternatives. French thread is not as common.
Alternatives: Certainly. Stronglight is a likely choice. Just remember you are looking for French thread and make sure you get the correct spindle length.
Protruding threads: Assuming you were looking at a Campag BB, then that would be the Ti Super Record BB. Fits Campag Record crankarms.

I saw two French thread Campag BB sets for under $100.

Campy ARE very nice, and high quality....but expensive. What are they worth? Very subjective. If you go with Campy BB, are you going with Campy crankset as well? One must match the taper of the spindle to the taper of the crankset. Threads on spindle....some spindles mount the crank with a bolt, some mount them with a nut....simple as that, no big difference to the crank, just the mounting bit. KNOW your spindle length needed and the type of threads of the BB, is it French Threading? Swiss? British?

Thanks! It's a French threaded BB, and I'm considering building a fixed gear bike, so I imagine I'll just put a 52T on the front crank. Thoughts? I guess I should get Campagnolo components on this project, if I can..!

Well, being the Italophile that I am, I will never find fault with anyone wanting Campagnolo parts, however, you may want to look hard at the offerings available from Stronglight...they also have some nice quality and parts and some great looking cranksets and usually for far less money.

One warning with older Stronglight though, Different size crank puller tool than common...you will need a new tool...and they are not cheap, add that to your cost.

I have a SL on my Motobecane and I love it. So I might go that route. I can use a Campy BB and Spindle with an SL crankset though right?

There is little reason to spend the big money for a legacy Campagnolo bottom bracket. In addition to Stronglight, you have Phil Wood (just buy the French thread cups), or even Velo-Orange who have a cartridge BB with French thread cups.

The comment about special crank pullers for Stronglight is only if you choose to use a Stronglight crank, and one of those from that older vintage period.

The Sheldon Brown site should answer your questions about matching. It isn't rocket science, so matching up isn't tough.

I strongly suggest going for the inexpensive cartridge units, as they are very, very low maintenance, and it simply doesn't really matter what name is on the spindle that cannot be seen!

If you are going fixed, you will need to pay close attention to your chainline. Usually if you use the existing inner chainring your chainline should be about right. If you plan on using the outer ring then your chainline will be off unless you go with a shorter spindle. Unfortunately getting the right chainline is usually a little bit of trial and error. Not something you want when you are buying high dollar BB's.

Good point. I was thinking about machining a SL 93 to use just the outer chain ring, so I'd need to get a 110mm Spindle I assume?

Glad you checked back in with the result (many don't), and glad it all worked out. Although the green tires are a bit too much for this old guy, it looks like it all came together well. Any problems getting the chainline correct? And what did you end up using for the BB?

Used a Campy Veloce BB and the Chain line is great. Rides beautifully!
