When did they start anodizing rims?
It's getting harder and harder to find vintage polished aluminum rims. Most of what I see for sale is anodized, but they just don't look right on older bikes. I'm wondering when rim anodizing began, and when it became prevalent (I suppose somebody was doing it in 1930 or something, on a small scale). It seems to have gone from everything-polished in 1970 to everything-anodized by the mid-80's.

Built Nisi tubulars anodized in the late 70's, Sludi model perhaps.....
Mavic Open Sport silver rims are readily available at reasonable prices today for any retro-ish build.

In 1975 Nisi Oro finished rims were available in the USA.
I rode them even on the track, 200 grams w/o washers. The also made a 280 gram version.
We all liked the label on them, "For Professional Use Only"
Super Champion introduced anodized rims that year later at the trade shows, Black and Blue and gold, they did not show up at retail for quite a while, late 1976.
Ambrosio introduced anodized rims in 1977ish.
The Mavic SSC rims were the first from them, dark blue and dark warm grey. I am not certain on the dates. The SSC's were outrageously expensive but had a great reputation.
I guess one has to look at images of the Pro peloton to help place the introduction.

+1 on the Open Sport, cheapest of the Mavic range but build up without much trouble. I've put two seasons on my first ham-fisted build, including off road stuff, and never had a problem with the rims.
