86 Peloton Built for Comfort
Here are some updated pictures of my 86 Peloton modified for comfort with Velo-Orange bars, shifters, and grips.

Just from the looks of it I like the build.
How about some details about components etc and things you changed out from the original. Very nice, Rick |
Lookin' good. Is that the left blank bar? How is it?
|
It is the Velo Orange Left Bank handlebars. The cassette was replaced with a wide ratio set with 34 teeth on the biggest cog. If I remember correctly it has a Suntour long cage VX shifter. The Brooks Saddle is in green; it came with the bike when I got it. One day I plan to put a Sugino Triple on it.
|
That looks like a lot of fun. Aesthetically, I would say that the grips would look really nice in black, but, whatevs, ride the heck out of it. Chrome fenders would be a nice touch.

Lately there have been some threads regarding lower gearing on C&V lightweights. This can be important to the older and the overweight in hilly terrain. In my continuing effort to make myself more comfortable on my Peloton, during this past week I installed a Sugino XD600 46/36/26 triple crankset. The Dura-AceFD was retained for front shifting duties.
This. morning i was able to take it out for a nice ride and I could not be more pleased. Everything shifted very well front and rear and I was able to ride up hills that I had previously had to walk. I may have to get some some more of these triples for my other bikes. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5032/...2cebee5b_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5191/...cf02b68c_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3904/...0b4a4afd_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3890/...4c4bd2bf_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3861/...e41c3406_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr |
Clean and classy.

Great looking bike. Where I'm at is very flat, but I can appreciate lower gearing to get up tough hills, glad it's working out for you.
I LOVE the look of the rear triangle in black like that. Schwinn usually impresses me with their aesthetics. vonfilm, can you tell me about your shifters? I like the idea of mounting downtube shifters on the bars like that. Are those the mounts sold by VO? |

Really nice build and appearance. I'm also using a Sugino 48, 36 & 26 triple, it provides an ideal range. I have a triple on all my bikes and they always provide both a large range and well spaced intervals between the cogs. The dark rims also complement the frame. Well done.
|
What are the rims ? They look like Matrix. A well done project !
I can see myself doing the same thing to my many Schwinn steeds down the road as well.Have to keep those left bank bars in mind. |
vonfilm, the geometry's pretty tight on the Peloton, how does it handle. I bought a set of VO tourist bars for my '84 Raleigh Supercourse. I hesitate mounting them, I'm afraid it will be too twitchy.
|
They are Matrix rims on I think Campagnolo Athena hubs. The handling is on the edge of being a little twitchy with the Left Bank bars. One person's twitchy is another man's responsive though.
I have thought about going to randonneur bars on a Technomic stem like I have on my 87 Super Sport. I am still torn on this question though. |
A pic of your 87 SS please with this set up. I have an 87 as well but still set up as a racer.

Heres my 87 Super Sport with a Technomic stem and Randonneur bars.

I found after riding it for awhile that the Left Bank handlebars were not for me on the Peloton. It did not seem to put enough weight on the front wheel and it made the steering a little skittish. The single hand position was not comfortable for very long. Some changes had to be made.
I went back to drop bars, SR Road Champions on top of a 60 mm Nitto Technomic stem. Tektro RD 341 levers take care of braking and the Suntour Superbe DT shifters were mounted in Rivendell bar end pods. Wrap is by Fizik. The asymmetry of the finishing tape was a mistake, but I kind of like it. I am very pleased with the results. It is now more comfortable than ever. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5577/...a1c2f756_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3864/...e53d7af0_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3855/...fa2514b3_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5562/...673f70f4_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3874/...dcdc442d_b.jpg image by vonfilm, on Flickr |

To fast looking for the comfort look. |
