Last week I picked up Waterford built Paramount frame (8/84 per serial number) and built it up. Hoping it actually warms up enough to take it out...

Your 8/84 has to be one of the earliest examples of the new generation of Paramount decals. Very nice!

It is Fizik Microtex tape. Sort of a metalic blue.

I finally got out for a ride yesterday ... snapped a shot of my '84 now that I've put decals on it. I didn't like the livery at first, it's so different form the other years, now I love it!

What range freewheel are you running in back? And is that a 52/42 front?

The 5 speed freewheel is the original Regina 14/26 unit, still in great shape. The front has 52/41 chain-rings. A Campy 41 tooth ring is pretty hard to come by I think and is the smallest that can be put on the BCD of that crank.

I think the original owner was trying to get lower gears and that was the best he could do with that crank. He eventually changed it to a Sugino crank with a 52/39. He also went to a Phil Wood rear hub with a 7 speed 13/28 freewheel so he finally did get gearing he liked. Luckily for me he kept all the original stuff!

brilliant! You have a good thing going with the Paramounts and the goodness coming out of the Waterford Factory. I've found those folks to be super helpful with my 1959 Paramount build. Just got in an a set of decals (of course, they verified the serial of the bike before they would sell them to me from Waterford and it's really sweet that they do provenance reports so you can trace the history of your bike.

Mine is currently bare steel (that silver soldier sure is stunning!) awaiting a dip in copper before I allow a patina to develop and then apply the decals and clearcoat). Of course, to the offense of purists, but who needs another chrome paramount. I figure I'll have this bike for a lifetime and a faithful restoration a long term goal. I haven't priced the 1950's Campy parts lately, have you? Below are the decals, awaiting application.

14-16-18-23-26? Too bad Schwinn was up against the 5-speed constraint, because the 14-16-18-20-23-26 I put on my Bianchi is perfect for either half-step (50-47) or 1.5-step (50-42) gearing. I use my 20T ring a lot and would hate to have that big gap in my gear progression.

Instead of 52-49 / 14-16-18-23-26, Schwinn should have considered something like 49-44 / 13-16-19-23-26 or 52-47 / 14-17-20-24-28, if the rear derailleur could handle 28T.

This is Dad's Paramount. I believe it may be a Watsyn (some kind of funny spelling, I'm not certain) frame. It's livery isn't original to 1938 as 'someone' had an 'adventure' on it. Schwinn replaced the chain and seat stay, and replaced the headset, as well as redid it in current (mid sixty's) livery. Needless to say my Father was not pleased...



At the very least the fork needs a respray (it's peeling), but other than as noted, it's all original. I have, somewhere, catalogs from the era - as I mentioned earlier my Uncle owned a bike shop in Melrose, MA before WWII.

Ed, that's a very nice looking Paramount, but the Nervex Professional lugs would indicate the frame was made after 1952 at the earliest. Before then, Schwinn used "keyhole" lugs on the Paramounts. EDIT - Your seat lug does appear to be a keyhole style lug, so it's likely your bike was made very soon after the company started using the Nervex lug set.

ROTFL - Dad met Mum sometime circa 1942 while riding around the Gettysburg battlefield, he on his Paramount, she and her family on some balloon-tired bombers. One can only imagine the impression made by this skinny-tired red bike.

The bike came via my Uncle, pre WWII. Now, is it possible that rather than repair the damage from my escapade, Schwinn replaced the entire frame? Maybe, and I have no way of knowing that.

Very cool story about how your dad met your mom... no wonder the bike is very special to you!

What kind of accident did 'someone' have on it? Could Schwinn have replaced the head tube and lugs with what the had in stock at the time?
