Ed, Another black and gold Cannondale. I bought the bike brand new specifically for the paint scheme. The clear coat has a 10% gold tint that really doesn't photograph well. The frame can appear black with a gold outline or a really dark golden depending on the sun's position.

This early 80's Centurion Super Lemans really pops when polished and waxed. What really sets off a black bike are pinstripes (lugs) and bright work (Al, chrome, SS, etc.). Gold is fine if not over done and laid down in thin lines. I like chrome forks but this Centurion has black painted chrome. Go figure.

Here is one more to add - still need to add some hammered fenders. 1983 Raleigh Gran Tour I recently acquired ( Reynolds 531C ). Not really noticeable is the gold lining around the lugs and cutouts which adds a bit more to the color scheme. The only concession I made to it as found was to update the early Shimano side pull brakes and levers to modern Tektro, the Nitto Technomic stem / Noodle handlebars and Brooks seat. There were some very narrow Shimano 600 pedals with integrated toe clips I swapped for MKS Sylvan touring pedals. Shimano 6 speed 13-34 freewheel with Sugino 48/34 crank set. The 700C wheels have Shimano 600 hubs and Super Champion rims (36H ). It tracks beautifully, hands off is great ( very stable ) and handles very predictably, feels light and responsive. I am fast becoming a fan of lighter tubing which works very well, for me at least. I won't be loading it up with those Carradice panniers, just lighter items.

How about black with champagne and gold accents added to the frame? A little purple for good measure. Might give you some other ideas on cables, bar wrap, etc.

Popularity of black and gold combination paint jobs/graphics really hit its high mark during the mid to late 70's, especially when Team Lotus used the color combination on their John Player Special sponsored GP and sport racing cars that were winning world championships back then....

Even after all these years, the color combination still holds up really well and looks attractive....

Here's my 1985 Nishiki Riviera Mixte. It originally had grey "suede" Vetta saddle with toe clips which were matching grey straps & say "Nishiki". It had drop bars with "turkey wing" auxiliary levers. Anyway, it's now got a Brooks B17 Special, Velo Orange Porteur bars wrapped in Fizik black bar tape and Tektro inverse brake levers. Has Velo Orange City Pedals. It's black with sort of champagne silver (goldish) font & gold outlines on some of the lugs.

The lettering on this is mostly celest against a blue shadow but for some reason Bianchi chose to put the model name "Brava" on the TT in gold. Here's a better pic. You can barely make out the name on the TT. Still don't know why they chose that color.

Of all the bikes I've owned (in my size) this is my all-time least favorite; heavy as all-get-out and a punishing ride to boot. Get any closer than 15 feet and and it's obvious the classy gold lettering is on cheap vinyl stickers, not decals, or painted. The gold paint accents around the lugs were really well done, though. The guy I sold this to absolutely LOVED the yellow (er.. "gold") tires

That's a great example, Chombi. And one of my very favorite cars. Bar none. But I have to disagree with you a bit about when black & gold hit its zenith. Which, I think, was in the 19th Century. Remember when just about every piece of cast iron or steel was painted, or Japanned, black, with gold pin striping or decoration? Tools. Machines. Consumer goods. Even bicycles, I think. Almost everything made of metal.

But I have to say, the JPS cars were among the best looking using the color combo. And to think, it was just taken from a cigarette package.
