Aw NUTS!!!

What vintage bicycle part have YOU broken lately....MUST be Monday, have NEVER broken a NUT before, well, at least a bicycle lock nut! (in my defense, looks like it was halfway broken already with a bit of corrosion on the old fissure surface.

I've had bad luck with some brake cable bolts in the past, but most of them came pre-abused and oxidized. Never managed to break a nut. Rounded a few off before, though

So you've been bustin' your, um, you've been working hard lately.

I'm sitting here, discouraged. I just busted off the ONLY M6 X 1 mm bottoming tap I could find anywhere around here, in the work piece.
A replacement Campy brake nut for Callig. :notamused::mad:

Bear with me, Callig …..

Don't feel too bad, I have broken a few taps, even worse is when you break off the tap extractor:bang: in the broken tap.

Hate it when that happens!

I have one side left of a axle stop screw in the rear NDS DO on my Pinarello, the inside twisted off at the DO opening. I have been letting Kroil soak in for several days at both ends. Almos too afraid to try to remove what is left.

Do they MAKE a tap extractor extractor?

Broke yet another dang Campagnolo seat binder bolt:

:(

Fortunately, I still have some spares:

Do these break often when they're installed on the bike or only during the installation? You're not making me feel very confident about mine.

I just broke one trying to loosen the post for adjustment. I was wondering if using a lubricant makes any difference. I don't have spares. They are readily available but pricey.

Just noticed the right verticle one on the bottom has a more agressive knurl! Is it older?

I've only had them break during installation. But when my bikes are up on the repair stand, I avoid clamping on the seat tube so as not to wreck the decals. I clamp on the seat post when I can, but some of my bikes require the seat to be moved up in order to have room for this. Readjusting back down after repair is when this happens.

I have read that "ANYTHING" with threads should be lightly lubed upon assembly...but I have also heard on some bits NOT to lube, and ALWAYS use loctite! What is a poor wrench to do!?! :)
