Can someone knowledgeable school me on the hierarchy of the different Voyageur models, their tubing and original weights and desireability?

The '73 World Voyageur and the '74-'76 Voyageur II were essentially the same bike (with only frame size and color choice differences between them), made for Schwinn by Panasonic. They had frames of 4130 chrome-moly DB tubing and the components were the same throughout the run (with minor updates). The frames were fully chromed underneath the paint, with exposed chrome lugs on the head tube, chainstays and fork ends. I consider both of these models to be very desirable.
There were no Voyageurs from '77 through '79, then in '80 the model name reappeared on an all new bike, also made for Schwinn by Panasonic. You can see a detailed chart showing the differences between the '80 through '91 models here: https://sandro.knot.org/blog/wp-conte...comparison.pdf

I'm keeping an eye out for one to modernize. I like my Paramount but am loathe to update it since it's so campy-encrusted; but I like modern gearing and shifting too!

I would figure that anyone that knows a little about this style of bike would understand what it is- even if they were unfamiliar with the Voyageur name.
As far as "underrating" anything- the Passage is one of those orphan bikes- it looks like it's quality tubing in the frame and stays, but the fork is Hi-Ten. Otherwise the rest of the bike looks to be pretty much close to Class A componentry.

Here's my '83 Voyageur SP. To be honest, I don't ride it much. It's not the bike's fault, though. I really don't like the half-step + granny setup, the tires are too heavy, I need a different saddle, I don't like the bar end shifters (added after this picture), I'm not crazy about the Nitto Noodle bars, etc...but for some reason, I really like the bike. I want to change things up a bit and see if it makes the difference I think it will.

Schwinn was all about adopting weird derailleurs. My Crisscross has an s1 mounting tab (which was basically a copy of an altenburger from the 40's)

It was a $150 CL find. I got it from the son of the original owner, who bought it at age 55 and rode it, apparently, only 55 miles, then parked it the basement. Mechanicals are great but there's a little rust here and there, like the bottom side of the headtube lugs. It was so under-used that the first time I was mashing it up the hill by my house I felt the freewheel tighten up by a few degrees.

Two - kind of in service.
My every weekend rider - an '84 or '85 Voyageur with some improvements:
This was a picture from last winter - and yes I adjusted the seat. I have a couple of faster bikes, but I tend to grab the Voyageur to ride on the weekends.
It makes for an enjoyable afternoon. I put many hundreds of miles on this bike this year.
1981 Chrome Voyageur - that I need to service and start riding:
Truthfully, I purchased the bike and have only put a couple of miles on it. It is ready to go. All bearings have been serviced, new inner cables installed, frame saver applied, etc. Once I install a decent seat and put air in the tires it would be good to go. It has been for sale a couple of times - but I am really torn on the idea of selling it. I feel guilty for not riding such a beautiful and classic bike.
I have an '84 Voyageur donor bike, and a few mid-80's Voyageur frames for another winter project.

WV is not flat..
Picked up this 1980 Voyageur 11.8 over the summer. It is in pretty rough shape in this picture, but it is one that I am looking forward to restoring. The girl I picked it up from got pretty emotional when I got it from her. This bike was her main transportation all through her college years. I reassured her it would be taken care of in the future.

Alright, here's a bad cell phone pic of my recently acquired (and a bit beat-up-looking) World Voyageur. This was the day I got it. Note the lack of bar tape or outer covering on the saddle. And especially take time to appreciate the rust on the stays and the areas of the top tube where the paint has chipped off to reveal the chrome. Ah, patina.
So, yeah, there's some work to do here... but she rides great. And the wheels are as true as anything used that I've seen. I've had brand new wheels that weren't so true.
