Spaceman, yours looks a good bit later. I do like the bars a lot...they seem nice and high. I've never managed to get stache bars comfortable. Maybe a show your frejus thread? |
I was asked to chime in on this Frejus. This is what Was believd to be an Italian Model from Europe. In the beginning, Tom sold them in the early 60's. I can only go with what I know as per conversations back in the day, and from speaking to other buyers and owners.
Tom lived on 119th Street and Pleasant Ave when I met him. I lived on 117th Street off 1st ave. We took our bikes to be repaired by him or his brother at 199st. Off Lexington Ave. These earlier Frejus were know as the Super Corsa Model, later to be named the Profssional Model. A prime example can be found on vintage lightweight web site run by Dale Brown. I owned the exact one there and thought for a while that, that bike was the one stolen from me in East Harlem. Anyway, Tom became a disrubutor for Frejus, and he changed the trouble some Ballila breaks, which were really bad, and build his Fresises up with Mod 61 Uni. brakes, the gran-prix special stem and bars, and Nuovo Record components, they were the newest and best at the time. However, although this Frejus is more of the touring type sold in Europe, the true racing scheme colors were on my bike and Dale Brown's bike on his site, which are the champagne scheme with red and white decals. The rims were more likely Fiamme or Ambrosio's, but I understand Tom went with either NISI or Mavics... Well, I hope this shed some light as to the different models. Tom's Bicycle Shop was on 119th Street, but he also had one on 3rd Ave or both. I do not know, but sold most of the Frejus Bikes from the 3rd Ave Store. I now have Four Frejus in my stable. I'm going to see if I have all of the pictures here at the job and up load in this post.
First Frejus: Paid 800.00, and seller misrepresented the model as an early 70's model, when in fact, it's a cousin to this Frejus on this post, just a click or two lower. Dated to between 1961-63. It's a Tour De France Tubing??? as there are no decal as to being 531, or Columbus Tubing. In really nice condition. Color Scheme is a Deep Red and White. Currently restoring to dated components. Second: Is a Frejus Strata Model 1970-71 with 531 Tubing. This one I bought from a dealer in Wisconsin. Cinelli Stem and Bars, Zeus Post, Nouvo Record on the Components. Again, a click or two lower than a Pro or Corsa, Super Corsa. 5th picture is also my Strata. Third is DaleBrowns Gorgeous Example of a Frejus Professional, also known as the Super Corsa. This is the same model that was stolen from me back in the day... Forth: Is my 1969 Super Corsa, Rebuilt this year, and all I need to mount are the Universal Mod 61 Brakes, she has model 68's now. My Pride and Joy. Fifth: Is the new comer to the Stable. Another Super Corsa that has a couple of Mixed Components, of which I have already purchased for the restoration. Nice Blue, Brooks Saddle, Mostly Campy,. NOTE The Oval CUT OUT Just under the seat post bolt... Last picture is the Tour De France being prepared for Restoration. Thanks for looking... Wow, awesome pics. Thanks very much for posting. :) I'm looking at your '69 Super Corsa & my '71 Professional, & not seeing any major differences, other than paint & decals. Yours even has the braze-on cable stops, on the top tube & chain-stay, like mine. I'd love to see the 1970 model, to see if it was a Super Corsa or Professional, & just to observe it, I guess. ;)

How's this, better or worse? :D I actually like these drop bars a lot more than I thought I would. I'm glad I made myself try them. But I really think the stem is what makes it work, I tried these bars before, with a lower stem height, & it just wouldn't go. Plus this stem is obviously a bit more upright, so the drop bars aren't quite as droppy. ;)
