Show Us Your Unique Orange Trek 400 Winter Project & Work Stand

I finally got around to doing something with a nice 1980 Trek 414 frame that had been knocking around forever. Original blue Imron finish was in poor shape, so I had it powdercoated RAL 2004 orange (supposedly close to Molteni- the flash makes it a lot yellower than it is). A yellow-on-blue seat tube decal is on the way, as well as some Nordstrom Brooks leather bar wrap. I'm going for an 8sp credit card tourer. (Sorry, no Super Course/gravel-grinder/vintage mountain bike/Mixte content).

Japanese or Chinese SD-1?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's not opposed to dropping 'upper tier' components on a 400 series Trek.

'72 Bandmaster Reverb. I built the combo cab, and added Weber 10F150's. The reverb is to die for. And Japanese SD-1 of course.

Nice looking frame, I see the darker orange but I love the moving two tone finish the flash gives it.

The design on the drum head is interesting (yes I do, but I won't spoil it for the youngones)

We'll have to start a "show us your music gear" thread, or maybe there is one.

I should resume playing guitar and building amps this year. In the past, I built clones of a 5E7 Bandmaster and 5F2A Princeton, then designed a 2x6AU6 amp when the latter was too loud when cranked up, then built a 5B5-ish Pro clone in a chassis that I made myself. Need something with reverb now -- maybe a "ReVibe" unit.

...or an ST70 clone so that I can listen to my records in a little more style.

Also, nice bike! I'm on the fence about touching up or completely repainting my '88 Bianchi Premio. There are a couple of rust spots and the decals are tired, but I'm not sure I'll want to the go to the effort of finding and applying new decals if I have it repainted. I've wanted a bike in Molteni orange for a while, though.

There is....

Back on topic, nice job with the paint and build. I've owned a number of 400 series Treks, and they were all good riders.

Update. Test rode it today, and I think it's a winner. Just need some clips, and decals are on the way.

the orange(yellow) seems very different under daylight.
very elegant build, kudos.
nice looking rando bar and the ergos(right?) combo too.
was the r spacing 130 or cold-set? just curious.

Thanks. I cold set it to 128 or so. The bars are GB Rando bars, and Campy 8-speed ergos. I'm not totally sold on the front/left FD Ergo action, and am kicking around the idea of using a DT shifter for the front, and replacing the left Ergo with an aero brake. But I don't feel like necessarily redoing the wrap.

And yeah: my camera has a devil of a time getting the orange right. This pic is closest to real life:

Now with decals, and a longer shake-down ride. There's room for fenders, and due to the large amount of mud splatter on a wet trail, I may add 'em.

Really cool.

That picture just totally captured my fancy. I just did a little reading on Glen Echo Park. That's really cool.

The NPS has a really cool learning site about the place.

...and another intrepid CV'er applies the daunting seat-tube wrap! Not for the faint of heart, and looks like it came out great, John. I see you even popped for the little Ishiwata sticker. Did you get the decals from JR? Great color for a rando bike-- wouldn't even need to wear a vest!

The decals were from velocals. The set also came with the downtube "trek" wrap that I'm pondering whether to use or eBay. The seat wrap decal was indeed a little daunting, and to be honest, ended up slightly shifted to the non-drive side. Also have the Ishiwata 022 fork decals, but this bike doesn't have 022 forks.

What size are the tires (Paselas, I'm guessing)? They don't look so much fat as "tall". I'm going to get some for my old De Rosa when I next need tires.

The tires are Pasela Tourguard 32s. They may not fit on your De Rosa. The Trek was built for 27"s, so there's a lot of clearance for bigger tires with the 700c wheels. (I was pleasantly surprised that the Shimano 600 brakes reached the 700c rims.) I do run Pasela 28s now on my '86 Masi Gran Criterium which has tighter clearances, probably similar to your De Rosa. They are also a nice ride and modestly priced.

Cool. I'm running Serfas Seca 700x28 tires on my De Rosa at the moment, but I want to go for the skinwall look so Paselas are up for the next set. I'll stick with 700x28 - love the ride!
