Stuff That Gets You In Trouble....

While reading some posts on another forum, I noticed a FS posting for these:

Price was reasonable and the seller bought them new, many moons ago but never used them. I have no immediate use for them either. None of my current bikes will accept these (Without looking goofy) and I have no projects in the works but felt I wanted them.

The problem is that I remember that Compass bikes sells these:

https://www.compasscycle.com/framebui...e_cp_boss.html

and I have an entire bikes worth and then some, of components in the basement. I only need a frame & wheels, to have a complete bike. I find myself googling images for brazed on center pulls and scouring ebay for a beat up frame to modify. I feel trouble brewing.

Post up the stuff that get you in trouble!

I love those brakes, had a pair and passed them on with the frame they came on to a friend. I hope he still rides it.

This stem and bar need a build. It probably will not be cheap.

Jeez! Where to begin? Parts, in general?

Plus, my obsession to get my mrs to like proper bikes, instead of balloon tire cruisers. For example:

This is my current project attempt: Frame for 24" wheels. Such wheels impossible to find, so I build a set. But I have to use fine Campy hubs, an IRD freewheel, and an XT RD to boot. Oh, and note the Euclid pedals. Evidence suggests she still won't like it. Sigh.

I got lots of lipstick on this little piglet!

You're wanting to build an entire bike around a pair of brakes?
You're my kinda guy!

Don't fall for that Jan Heine sales pitch "Brazing the pivots to the frame eliminates the pivot support arch. This reduces the weight, improves the brake’s performance and makes it more elegant."
So you eliminate a small alloy brake bridge, but add two steel pivots plus brazing. That doesn't reduce weight, it adds weight.

Weight, Schmeight! I just wan to to do it because it is more complicated, a bit unusual and I am a bike geek!

Before you go forging (brazing) ahead, double check that the bosses on the Royale Gran Compe calipers match the typical Weinmann/Dia-Compe pivot boss. Test, don't guess.

I wouldn't be so sure that it would weigh more? Factor in the long big headed center bolt, , center arch mount, AND the two pivot bolts, vs two small steel bolts for the pivot mounts and two braze ons. I think it would be genuinely lighter with post mounts.,,,,BD

Always wanted a Gazelle.

I stumbled onto this one in drag....

The essence of trouble.

6-8 months from now we'll see a bicycle come alive.

Nice! Welcome to the club. Does this one still have the butterfly brake bridge?

Why, yes it does.

We think it dates to 1977.

I got a set of Suntour XC Pro cantis a couple of years ago. My plan at the time was to put them on a nice Voyageur. Somewhere along the line, I decided I want to tuck them away for when I get all rich and stuff and have a custom made bike built for me.

As an aside, I just got my "nice" Voyageur. An 84 SP. It's pretty much dead nuts stock. I'm going to have to replace the bars, so now I'm thinking of what I want to replace. Bars, stem, rear derailleur, shifters, possibly brakes, possibly brake levers. A perfectly and well specced out bike- just needs to be cleaned and lubed and have the bars straightened/replaced to be rideable- and I'm going to entirely change the build. Duh...

I have a weakness for Pelissier 2000 hubs. I always consider buying if I see them online. Fortunately they do not come up that often in 36o and English thread.

We can actually start a 1977 Gazelle Owners Club now. Right after my previous post I drove out to pick up a Champion Mondial I'd bought during the holidays, and guess what: it's a '77 also! Trouble will start when I choose the wrong moment to explain to mrs non-fixie that my new year's resolution doesn't ... erm ... apply to bikes bought in 2013.

Very cool, I think the color is super.

Let's include plenty of pics on the "Dutch bikes" thread.

I've decided to go with my Campy GS gruppo I have here, so I think I have everything on hand.

Just waiting on decals and then I'll ship the frame to Sloar for a nice refinish.

Just to be on the safe side, would you mind posting pics of the Reynolds decals?

Thanks, yes, the color absolutely influenced the buying decision. I'll post it in the Dutch bike thread as soon as I've cleaned it up a bit.

The Reynolds decals are pretty much gone - see below - but I think they were these:

Thanks, that was quick.

Fortunately, I ordered the correct decal set.

I'll look forward to more pics of your nice Gazelle in the thread.

Wow this thread is full of cool stuff! And that a-frame you scored is one of them, absolute classic with that Superbe gruppo. It's your size as well I see

I got in trouble many times the past month. Of the six bikes I've bought I promised to flip five and sell some more just to justify a ridiculous purchase. Only flipped one so far so I don't dare to post anything yet.

Goldenboy,

Is it possible to straighten very slightly bent/warped alloy bars ? What straightening do you have to do ? I ask cause of a slightly tweeked Dawes ingraved bar. Very hard to replace so checking out my options.

Check out this thread I started: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ipping-Damage?

There's some good suggestions there.

I'm opting to replace- I'm thinking wider would probably suit me better. I will probably attempt to straighten the bars- but for something down the road, not for right away.

Good luck!

I had a nice Gazelle as well. Shipped straight from the mother land. It turned out to be too small but had the cool brake bridge!

I got this frame for $35 which seemed cheap. Then I had to buy a fork. And have a weird headset put in. And have a weird insert put in so I could use a normal bottom bracket.

I hope to build it into a bike soon. Maybe in the spring.
