is there a brand you particularly loathe?

I mean a real brand, not huffy or roadmaster or even Ross, but one th at gets talked about as lot here?

In my case yes, there'll is. I'm not going to mention it, not wanting to annoy anyone (even Pastor Bob, who knows what it is...). I realize it's kinda irrational anyway. But I digress....

So, out with it! What brand do you dislike irrationally? B

spdntrxi 01-09-14 08:29 PM

Trek.. and I own one. I used to feel that way about specialized too and I have 2.

balindamood 01-09-14 08:32 PM

Specialized...their business practices. I have two I keep trying to part with. I can't do it...and I hate myself for it.

zukahn1 01-09-14 08:35 PM

This will likely piss off a lot of people here but I don'y like Motobecanes everyone I have seen is overpriced and even the best have some elements of rather poor French labor union construction.

Excluding ones built in the 70's, Colnago.

Chrome Molly 01-09-14 08:42 PM

I have a few vintage Treks which are much liked, but...

When they ate up so many great smaller brands on their way to mediocrity, and overpricing for moderate performers, well...

sloar 01-09-14 08:44 PM

Nope, I like them all!

gomango 01-09-14 08:45 PM

Definitely Raleigh.

I know lots of people like them, but they didn't have to spend their Saturday mornings building them.

Man, they shipped some stinkers.

I can probably come up with some more brands though.

Working in a bike shop isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Edit: The maddening part of the Raleigh brand was one never knew what issues you would have until you started building. Frame alignment, whacked drop outs and poor/unsafe lugwork were my main concerns usually, but every once and awhile, one came out of the box looking like a million bucks. Now that was happy moment.

I'm TOTALLY with you on that assessment. You're absolutely right.
(About pissing off a lot of people that is.)

Have to? I wanted to spend Saturday mornings building them! I have 10 of them currently, and have built plenty more!

JohnDThompson 01-09-14 08:56 PM

Doesn't get a lot of mention here, but "C. Itoh." I've never seen one that wasn't a boat-anchor.

CroMo Mike 01-09-14 09:01 PM

Due to the diverse likes of the members here, I think it best to withhold comment. Gaspipe boat anchors, however, top my list. I've tried some and just didn't enjoy them. Even a tandem gaspipe boat anchor; I finally gave it away.

Okay, that really did make me LOL. Which is good as I was seething a bit esp about the 'labor union' crack, which I think does not belong here...and neither would my retort, so I'll save it.

It is kind of odd though to dislike vintage Motobecanes for being overpriced. If one doesn't like them, then the price shouldn't matter...right?

Hey, no fair! Spill yours. :p

At any rate, I can't think of any brands I truly dislike, but I'm not likely to buy a Trekspecializedgiant anytime soon. Mostly because I'm a contrarian. ;)

Schwinn! There I said it. Honestly, I don't think you dislike Schwinns. I think you dislike heavy, stupid bikes. If you had a paramount, I'm guessing you would ride it.

Built up one that wasn't a boat anchor got it under 23lbs with a fairly basic build it had a slightly odd nicer Bridgestone built frame sold it for $200 but I guess it was the exption for this brand.

+1 - Motobecanes are the only French production bikes that don't look like they were built by sabatouers...and they seemed to have better thought out (not French loyal) parts mixes.

Bahhh...there are lots of brands i don't think much of and there's stuff I like that others don't. Most of it's marketing and mythology.

Michael Angelo 01-09-14 09:50 PM

I don't really hate any bike, but there are some that will not be concidered being added to the stable, would get the boot in an instant.....I even price them to sell, fast. !!

Centurion
Cannondale
Specialized ( just threw out a Carbon tubed alloy lugged Allez tonight)
Mexican Benotto's (had two couldn't get rid of them fast enough)
mid 80's Schwinn's ( feel like boat anchors to me)
and the list goes on.....

zukahn1 01-09-14 09:50 PM

As for a brand I truely don't like I would have to go with Specialized not so much for the numerouse bad overpriced junk they have marked by puching the brand name. But the owners who have brought hundreda of POS ones into the local bike coop or shops where I have worked thinking they are great bikes, and seemed devotely sure there bike was great because it was a Specialiezed.

Yup, I'm busted. I have owned two Chicago Schwinns, and I don't regret that but not do I miss them. There are very few Chicago Schwinns I would ever want, and the idea of putting the Schwinn name on a bike that wasnt made in Chicago, well, that's just perverse.

vonfilm 01-09-14 10:07 PM

I don't see the appeal of Cannondale's.

kaliayev 01-09-14 10:08 PM

Loath is a pretty strong word, but I guess the closest would be Specialized because of the owner. Having said that there are a few old Spech I would like to have. Also if someone would send me a shiny new Lighthouse Cycles Sequoia I'd take back everything bad I've ever said about Sinyard.
