Real World Weights

After the thread regarding digital scales caught my interest, I decided to buy a Park scale and weigh my bikes.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps5c3d631f.jpg
The CIOCC weighed in at 20lb-4oz. This is without the light but the bottle cage is included. I have Mavic G.L. 330 rims and Vittoria Corsa SC tires, and a Concor Superleggera saddle.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...psfaa566ba.jpg
The Raleigh Professional weighed in at 21lb-10oz. This has Mavic rims and Vittoria Corsa SC tires. This is including the rather heavy Brooks saddle but no water bottle.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps545b681f.jpg
The Sekai weighed in at 21lb-14oz. This is with clincher rims/tires so tubulars would likely cut that weight considerably.

It would be interesting to see some actual weights of C&V bikes. How do some of your bikes come out on the scale?

seedsbelize 01-30-14 05:58 PM

My 92 Paramount weighs in at 21.12 lbs., with two water bottle cages and Bassano Vento saddle. Araya CTL370 rims and tricolor hubs. I don't remember what tires it had on it at the time. Probably CST 700C x 25mm. 105 throughout.

Grand Bois 01-30-14 06:10 PM

Those weights are a bit lighter than I would have expected.

Michael Angelo 01-30-14 06:17 PM

I don't bother weighing my bikes. I know they're on the heavy side, all my bikes being 60-61cm frames with Clinchers.

RobbieTunes 01-30-14 06:26 PM

20.4 lbs with pedals and cages, but not with bag.

Lightest steel I have. My Cinelli Equipe Centurion and Merckx Corsa Extra are about 22, give or take an ounce. The Merckx is just slightly lighter than the Cinelli. Heaviest is my 1979 Centurion Semi Pro at 24.55..........Doesn't really matter much, as I've lost 25 lbs since July.

If I want to ride a light bike, I've got a couple modern bikes. They're not as fun.

Add 4 lbs to each for water.

Chombi 01-30-14 06:34 PM

My Vitus Plus Carbone 7, my lightest bike, weighed in at 17.15 pounds.....
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44...R/DSC02347.jpg
(measured on a digital scale) with GEL280 rims, Schwalbe Milano tubs, Berthoud Galibier Ti railed saddle. It's wearing my heavier Wolber Profil 20 rimmed wheelset in this particular pic.
I'm really tempted to finally install my super weenie CLB professionel compact brakeset and CLB aluminum cased cable set on it and maybe finally break into the 16 pound territory..... but dang, the Spidel LS1 sidepulls I currently have on the bike works so well and looks so nice!

due ruote 01-30-14 06:55 PM

About 21.

About 32. 2 lbs per tire doesn't help much, I've discovered.

I was surprised as well... especially for the Raleigh.

+2. I weigh a lot of bikes, and frames, since weight is talked about so often. It's interesting. I find it rare to weigh a bike and have it surprise me by how light it is. It usually works in the other direction. Often, it's someone else's bike who's standing nearby. In those cases, there's almost always some disappointment when the numbers come up on the scale. :)

Myself included. Especially with the size of freewheels on the bikes.
Last time I weighed a bike was when I was racing. My road bike came in at 21lbs. with race wheels, empty waterbottle and no spare of pump. My Track bike came in at just under 19, but it has Columbus PS tubing and Cinelli steel bar and stem. Track IRON.
By "feel" I probably have some lighter ones now.

The CIOCC catalog shows a similarly equipped bike at 20lbs but I just assumed the catalogs were always a bit optimistic. Apparently it was pretty accurate.

RobbieTunes,

I've been lusting on your Simoncini bike on Ebay the last couple days now. Such a classy build. I truly wish that bike was in my budget to buy at this time. Someone is going to score themselves a really lovely looking and riding bike. Classic looks and modern components. I love it.

RobbieTunes 01-31-14 08:36 AM

Thanks. Seeing those Ciocc weights didn't surprise me, and now I know why sloar is building one. The real impetus behind the Simoncini was cudak888, in Florida. He had the frame, knew it was a good one, worth saving with prep and paint, and knew I'd listen to what he said about it. He's never steered me wrong, and he was absolutely right about this one. Barring a sale, I'm working on replacing the Veloce shifters with the polished Centaur of the earlier generation, and the seatpost is now an aero Athena. I suppose it could go 150g lighter with a Eurus wheelset, but I like the high flange of the Vento G3's.

jonwvara 01-31-14 08:51 AM

My bikes mostly seem to be around 25 lbs, but they have clinchers, leather saddles, and big 62-63 cm frames.

Just as a side note, I think there's such a thing as what I would call a "reverse weight-weenie." A friend and neighbor who I ride with usually goes around on a Riv Atlantis frame loaded down with every steel touring rack you can get, a huge tool kit (he brings a set of shop allen wrenches, not a folding one) and all kinds of other stuff. (Interestingly enough, he doesn't know much about repair work.) It's great for me--I leave all my tools and spare parts at home when we ride together.
I maintain that he likes an ultra-heavy bike because it gives him an unanswerable excuse for being the last one up any big hill, which he (understandably, given that his bike, racks, and gear weighs nearly 60 lbs) always is.

There's a photo or two of him and his bike in the 12/04 blog posting at http://www.redclovercomponents.com/blog.html

If I remember right, my 1989 cannondale SR400 weighs 21.3lbs. I used the bathroom scale method. It's factory original, with Shimano 105, Wolber wheels, and shimano 105 pedals.

ldmataya 01-31-14 10:03 AM

1966 Bottecchia Professional original pre-Nuovo Record, Fiamme tubulars, Brooks saddle - 22.2
Ridley carbon cyclocross with 32mm mud tubulars and alloy rims - 17.4

The weight appears to be in the frame ;)

This is a 62cm frame, btw.

Six jours 01-31-14 10:15 AM

I'm surprised enough at the OP's weights that I think he should check his scale. An SL/SLX frame with full Super Record in his size would average a pound or a pound-and-half heavier than that on the shop scales we used "back in the day".

Maybe Park figured the way to happiness is to regulate their scales to show what people want to see. :p

<edit> The only comparable bikes I have on hand these days include an SLX Masi with Super Record and 400 gram rims with 250 gram tires, and an '86 Carbon Guerciotti outfitted the same way. The Masi is a 61 c-t and weighs 23 pounds, and the Guerc is 59-c-t and weighs 20 pounds.

Kommisar89 01-31-14 10:19 AM

I'm pretty sure most of the weight when I ride is in my fat a... But anyway, I've weighed a number of my bikes:

1973 Bottecchia Gran Turismo - 58.5 cm frame, setup with Fiamme tubulars, Nuovo Record, and Unicanitor saddle: 22.5-lbs
1973 Bottecchia Gran Turismo - 58.5 cm frame, setup with Rigida 1622 rims and clinchers, Rally long-cage derailleur, and Brooks Professional saddle: 25.2-lbs
1974 Bottecchia Special w/alloy rims and crank: 25-lbs
1974 Peugeot UO8 with alloy rims and crank: 25-lbs
1988 Panasonic PT3500 w/lights, fenders, rear rack & panniers, sprung Brooks Flyer saddle, and toolkit: 32-lbs

For comparison:
2002 Bianchi Veloce with carbon crank: 21.5-lbs
2004 Bianchi Pista: 19-lbs

seedsbelize 01-31-14 10:28 AM

I'm using the same scale Robbietunes uses--not a Park. It agrees exactly with the scales at the airport.

vonfilm 01-31-14 10:53 AM

My recent 1987 Schwinn Super Sport build weighed in at the LBS scale at 23.13 lbs.

Amesja 01-31-14 11:05 AM

My Raleigh Competition rando weighs in at just under 30lbs with all the racks bags, fenders, lights, water bottle cages and Dynohub.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-d...929_121721.jpg

Heavy CR18 rims and RibMo tires don't help much either.

Add my tools, spare tube and other mechanical sundry, clothing bits, food and water bottles and it is pushing 40lbs. Not exactly a lightweight.

The naked bike without racks, bags, fenders or cages and with the spare non-dyno wheel was in the low 21's the last time I weighed it.

seypat 01-31-14 11:11 AM

Some good weights there. Personally, I would like to see the bikes weight sans the hubs/wheelset. The wheelset can and sometimes changes from ride to ride. It's like asking a person what they weigh with their clothes on.

But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first or last time.

seedsbelize 01-31-14 11:22 AM

My 87 prelude frame and fork weigh 8 lbs., and my 78 schwinn world hi ten frame and fork weigh 9.4 lbs. I thought it would be heavier.

jimmuller 01-31-14 11:35 AM

I too am skeptically surprised by the light weight of the OP's bikes. I've weighed mine occasionally by the stand-on-scales-with-and-without-the-bike method.
Rounded to the nearest pound:
Masi 23lbs
Bianchi 24lbs
Raleight & Centurion 25lbs
Bertin 27lbs IIRC
UO8 wth rack and lights but alloy wheels, crank, bar, seatpost > 30lbs

Granted the Masi's large FW makes it heavier than a pure-race configuration, but I can't see any way to knock off another 2-3lbs.
