Rear derailleur replacement

Can I replace my old subtour rear derailleur with a more modern one, or more recent then 1976 or so? do I have to look for something specific? thanks

I suppose you can replace it with whatever will fit. If you don't have a derailleur hanger, you may have to get a hanger- or use the one on your existing derailleur.

What bike and derailleur are you speaking of, and what derailleur were you thinking of replacing it with?

Just about any nicer RD will work fine for this. You can pick one up off of EBay for under $20.

Sure, just make sure it can wrap enough chain for your gearing. When in doubt, a longer cage will always work.

If you don't care about being vintage correct you can buy a fairly nice new Shimano Tourney for about $10.

That's the biggest part, make sure it's a longer cage. Sheldon says it's the shift levers & cassette/freewheel that matter, not the RD, & I kinda believe him. ;) I've just switched to a Ultegra RD-6500, from a SunTour XC Pro, because it's just a bit longer cage, & works great. I might have been able to mod the XC Pro to work, but I like having a little margin for error. :)
