I thought this looked pretty nifty.

Wow a saddle with titanium rails for only $17.
When I received it, my magnet stuck to the rails, and the saddle weighed more than advertised. I wrote to the seller who gave me an RMA number and a shipping label. I never got around to returning it, so I decided to use the saddle.
That was a bad idea. I rode it yesterday for the first time.
It shredded my nice wool trousers and then it fell apart.

I wonder if the colder temperature caused the plastic to become brittle...

Shees, I'm glad we can still call Tom a guy with that saddle breaking at that spot...
On a group ride about two years ago a guy in front of broke his carbon seat post, he had 50 km more to go with a razor sharp spear of charcoal aimed at his fambly jewels... The guy was a beast though, and finished the ride a danseuse.

Weelll, the idea itself purportedly isn't that bad, but this is a cheap knockoff. The Tioga Spyder proper typically seems to last more than one ride. It's just perfect that one of the more frequently copied saddles happens to be the one that depends most on material quality.

Seems like some of the craziest "new" ideas are seen in saddles. I guess when a person's behind doesn't like their current saddle, they'll try anything, no matter how unusual.

Probably not in New York. But I did read an article once about a woman riding across Antarctica. She was using a leather saddle, because a plastic one would have shattered in the cold.

Actually, most ideas are bad ideas. But since ideas are so cheap, it costs little to get to the good ideas.

No one is allowed to have good iDeas. Apple has copyrighted the good iDea and all derivatives. They dont mind if you have bad ones though, as long as you don't call it an iDea.

I didn't know about the Spyder.
I found an old saddle in my junk heap, an Avocet Racing I which happens to have one of those tubular tire holders. It's heavy, but it's a pretty groovy find.

Let's assume that the saddles that fractured were molded from some family of nylon.
Nylon absorbs water, and increases the distance between the molecules.
When its freezing, nylon parts will be more brittle.
Nylon parts lack toughness in the cold
Yes, there is a biological heater sitting on top of them, but probably not enough heat.
I saw that Taiwan saddle a while back, and wondered about its strength, it just looked like there was too little material to do the job.
The ti rails are probably ti oxide coated steel.
Who knows what quality of resin they used in molding.
Aston Martin just recalled a number of years of production of vehicles as the Chinese supplier did not use the specified resin in an accelerator pedal link and parts broke.
Oops, often its trust then verify. Even for the big boys.

Wow Tom, sorry to hear you got a dud! From my personal buying experiences, the $17 one is the chromo hollow rail model.
I own both the Vertu version and the Tioga version, both have held up incredibly well.. but I will note you do want bike specific clothing or pants that without sewn on back pockets perhaps.. since as you found out it can snag quite easily.
I don't like false advertising or that you got a bad one to boot..

I had a "Zeus" suede covered saddle that developed a crack like that. Before throwing it away i peeled up the suede, and found it was an Arius saddle underneath the suede. Not just like yours, but pretty close.
