The hex socket in the cap was completely rounded, so I actually put in those two pin holes to extract the cap. I figured the cap was worthless, so no harm in getting creative.

FWIW, I switched to a different screw so no more plastic.

I've got a lathe and milling machine in my garage shop and find them very handy for repairing or making the parts I'd rather not hunt down and buy, as well as parts that are no longer available. In one of my other hobbies, racing radio controlled gas-powered boats, I make a lot of the running hardware rather than spend the $400, per boat, it would cost to buy it.

Using straight bar stock would really complicate things and turn what is probably a 10 minute job into more than a few hours as it would add steps for milling, drilling, and tapping the extractor.
