replacing forks on raleigh
Hi just wondering because it is difficult to find any raleigh 1'' threaded headsets around with the 26tpi would i be able to replace my forks with the ones in the link, or ones like them. To then be able to use a JIS style 1'' threaded headset. I was going to replace my old forks anyways because the rake angle is way to big and they have a nasty dynamo hanger on them.

You'd rather use an ISO fork and headset to match the 30.2 frame cup diameter on the Raleigh (measure it to be sure?). JIS cups will be a little loose at 30.0 mm

ok so it is doable then ill have alook around for some ISO forks thanks

I have a few orphaned Raleigh forks in real nice shape.

Dean, fork is singular unless you're talking about more than one. ;)

That should be a sticky.

Stick it in chicken, beef, tofu etc,,,
A picture of the Raleigh model you're working with is always helpful. |
Aftermarket 26tpi Headsets are available from Yelow Jersey. See:
http://www.yellowjersey.org/eastbits.html I can't vouch for their compatibility first hand, but The guys at Yellow Jersey sell the Indian-made, bolt for bolt Raleigh cloned Eastman Cycle. Theyalso have many genuine vintage parts. |
If your getting new fork's make sewer you're break's have enough reach. :/

I've seen a few new Raleigh headsets on eBay. A bit pricey, but still less than another fork.
|
I've seen a nice set of reynolds 531 forks with 24tpi that are 1". From 25 to 50 pounds and I could find a head set for a 24tpi setup. Just way I was thinking was that I was going to change the fork in the first place and thought I may ads well put a set in that I could get a headset for if you get what I mean. I don't really mind if they're era appropriate I am building a single speed bike for town riding and wanted something effective. With nice tight bearings that also looked the part. I much prefer the look of an old racer converted to a single speed or fixie type rather than the new fixies.

Yes, measure your cup diameter- there are two 1" threaded headset standards, 30.2 mm (ISO) and 30.0 mm (JIS). ISO has 26.6 mm crown race diameter and JIS has 27.0 mm crown race diameter. If you have a JIS fork and an ISO frame, then get a Tange Passage or Tange Levin headset which have 30.2 cups and 27.0 crown race. If it's the other way around, then you're out of luck.

I'll try get photos if the frame up its a 1980 raleigh sun solo. Not sure if it's an ISO frame, I'm new to the older bikes. Thanks for the info

So like this one ? seems good value too. The stack height isn't relevant at this stage because I havan't even gotten the forks yet. so i can take it into account when I go looking for forks.

Ye sorry I havnt gotten it yet, but annoying the way people on these forums get so hung up on Abit of a gramerical error. I've grown up around a lot of people on bike professionally an that's how they pronounce it. And people in bike shops so I'm not at fault. Also are you all certain that the pleural of the fork on a bike isn't the same as a single fork. Like forks the singlure and forks the pleural. Like sheep and sheep. I live in ireland and that's how everyone I've met pronounces it.
|
One other thing to note, I am here for help with my bicycle problems. Not my grammatical problems. You have notting productive or pleasant to say dot say anything.
|
It's really just light hearted fun Tracey94, keep a thick skin. My grammar, verb tenses and writing skills are sew bad that they ignore it now. Sticks around and measure those forks cups and crowns races.
It's a helpful and gracious forum most of the time. Far better than most. |
Ok thanks sorry for being hot headed I guess
|
^^ Yeah, you're getting off easy, mate. When I was a n00b here, they painted my **** blue and set fire to my ********.
