You can also easily link individual photos.

I have to look at that and smugmug.
I was about ready to flood flickr then they changed it and it loads way too slowly now.
Photobucket often seems to have bad links over time as a user of this forum, way too often the image goes "missing" I think there must have been an upgrade that fouled old addresses.

noglider 03-06-14 11:25 PM

It's no use blaming the user. If many people are making the same mistakes, it's because they haven't made doing the right thing easy and obvious.

Photobucket works OK for me, but seems to load really slowly, which is a huge pain when going back going back through the pages to find a picture I uploaded a year or two ago. I mean, thumbnails, yeah, they're tiny and small file sizes and they should able to show you a hundred per page, fairly quickly, not 9 or twelve and take forever to load.

Even so, Imgur seems to load even more slowly, and flickr sometimes not at all.

I just started using Photobucket's email upload function Pastor bob mentioned earlier, and that saves quite a bit of time. I've even found the 'edit photo' tools useful, since I'm usually just cropping and boosting saturation and contrast.

But I'm doing it v e r y . . . s l o w l y .

Same here. Perfect use for an old PC: Install linux or FreeBSD and run your own web server. Once you get it set up and running, it doesn't even need a monitor or keyboard. Just stick it in a corner somewhere and let it run. Or, if you're short of room, use a Raspberry Pi.

I did... then the hard drive crapped out...

Bullseye.

Photobucket runs very slow. I have all my pictures on PB, have them in separate folders. Still runs very slow, I also pay for upgraded account, which I can't see any difference from the regular service.

Italuminium 03-07-14 05:11 AM

That's why I use flickr, even though the name of site sounds like something naughty in my mother tongue. Don't ask the wrong kind of man to be his flickr buddy in The Netherlands, folks.

Reynolds 03-07-14 08:07 AM

Never had problems with PB, but my use is very limited - only to post here.

Kobe 03-07-14 08:16 AM

The filing system is not very good if you are rearranging files. I only use it for here also and use the dropbox app for other photos.

With over 5 or 6 years of pictures in Photobucket it would be a bit of a pain to move them somewhere else.

The Golden Boy 03-07-14 08:37 AM

I was using ImageShack- it was a little clunky- I think they had Spam problems a few years ago- it used to be free- but they changed it into a pay site. it actually looks like it might be nice. You can still access the pix you have hosted, but you can't load anymore.

I started a PhotoBucket account- but it doesn't seem as nice as ImageShack was before the upgrades.

rumrunn6 03-07-14 08:52 AM

I don't like the videos they force to play while you are managing your photos

noglider 03-07-14 09:59 AM

Sorry: poor wording! If users are making the same mistakes, it's because the people who provide the service haven't designed it well.

Wait... Imgur is slow for you? On a regular basis, not just once or twice? If so that is extremely weird. Imgur is known for being very fast.

+1 They redesigned the UI last year and made it infinitely more user-unfriendly. I've also thought about JDT's hosting your own web server, but every time I bring it up to friends who know way more about it than I, they end up saying there are too many possible security issues unless you really know what you are doing.

noglider 03-07-14 11:18 AM

I use Google Picasa/Plus. The user interface was good and then it got very bad until just now. They seem to be on the way to making it good again.

Flickr seems pretty darned good to me, though I haven't used it much at all.

Flickr is OK until you want to look at someone's photos on your mobile. On phones and tablets it is horrendous.

I tried it since you said that last time, and it works well for me on my ipad. I haven't tried it on my iphone yet.

Interesting, on android it has been totally horrible for me, both on my phone and tablet. It's bad enough that when I see a flickr link, I think, "do I really need to click that?"

It's possible I made an apples/oranges comparison there. I've only used Imgur to look at other peoples' pix, I've ever tried to use it for my own, and it could be more of a file-size issue than a fair measure of the site's speed. But yeah, it's slow every time I go there.

-holiday76 03-07-14 01:07 PM

i have a paid google storage account (grandfathered, i pay $5 a year for 50 gigs of storage, it's now something like $10 a month) and I use picasa. No issues.

ive done it all over the years including hosting my own but eventually i'd change plans and all my old image links would become useless. In fact almost all the images i've posted to this site from 2008-2010 or so are gone because of that.

If I were starting over again I'd look into Flickr more since they have unlimited space for images. I do have an account there as well, I just don't use it much.

I switched to ImageShack when Webshots went away. It works fine for me and my Government employer doesn't block it.

You're on BF from work?

just kidding

Moved to flickr from PB. Improvement in my book but still short in many areas. The sets work well but the Collections are not what I would expect in terms of visability or functionality.

Yep. This.

Photobucket was my initial choice for posting images to forums. Quick, easy, free. At this point I suppose I could just abandon the PB account, leaving the images intact, and move on to some other host, but I've never run into any problems that might give me cause.

As for the title of this thread, heck, anything will stink if you smell it from the right point of view.
Wait. Wha...?
You know what I mean.
