An exceptional Galmozzi!

Well worth your time on forum member Gunnar Berg's blog.

His very recent acquisition and some fascinating Galmozzi info is discussed in depth.

A truly beautiful Galmozzi is shared and a little Gino Bartali lore just for grins.

Rory sold his bike. Interesting.

Sometimes it's just luck; I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. And many thanks to Rory for the opportunity, I truly appreciate it.

Also a nod to Bartopolis, who's Galmozzi triggered the conversation that ultimately led to the offer from Rory. Good luck with whatever you chose to do with your bicycle. It has potential.

Good to see you post here Gunnar.

I'll say it again, you have my favorite blog going.

If you could just find a way to incorporate a little more fly fishing with everything else........:)

Beautiful! A grail bike for sure!

Re: "I grow old, Igrow old..." J. Alfred Prufrock. Nice. ;-)

Beautiful bike. Are you still down yonder watching birds, Gunnar?

Gunnar Berg 03-11-14 11:48 AM

We are stiil "down yonder" for another week or so. Then we will start our Spring migration north along the Gulf Coast.

Thanks to Gunnar Berg, I will never refer to my shop as a "man cave" but rather "The Growlery" ;).

Cheers,
Chris

Isn't that the truth.

If I had more room on our lot, I would have already started construction on one.

I like this bike, but am conservative.
I considered a "cambio" equipped bike but did not buy one after I did some practice reaching to where the control levers would have been.
Just too stiff I am.
Made the decision easy. There was one version If I recall that had longer levers so that the reach down was not so extreme, but I have not paid too close attention.
The "World Champion stripes" are in the correct order but get away with the use as there is a gold rule between each band.
I think the Columbus tubing sticker is not of the same era though. Probably an easy fix if you wished.
When one does a restoration of an old bike there is an expectation sometimes to make it as authentic as possible down to the last detail.
I can appreciate this but sometimes in doing so the bike will be relegated to the no use rack.

I just put dual pivot Campagnolo brakes on a mid 80's Super Record equipped bike last week, a smile at every stop. I just rode another with period correct Campagnolo Record side pulls today... took a few stops of adjustment to recall... yes these don't stop as fast and take more hand effort.

Beautiful bicycle, Sir, glad this one is in the hands of someone that understands its true value and appreciates the art and engineering. If you are migrating along the Gulf Coast and get to Pensacola, (NW Florida and Gulf Islands National Seashore) please allow me to buy a cup or 3 of coffee, or your choice of poison even.

Regards,
Bill

Gunnar Berg 03-12-14 09:35 AM

Thank for the offer. I hope Minnesota will be thawed out before we get that far aroung the Gulf.

Gunnar Berg 03-12-14 09:44 AM

If I were specing the paint, there wouldn't have been the later Galmozzi address label, the Columbus sticker nor the World Championship stripes, as Van Looy didn't win the Worlds until something like 1960. I didn't spec it, I only bought it. And I bought it because I liked it very much.

I hope I will be limber enough to shift it. I have had two or three friends recommend yoga, while another with some Cambio Corsa experience, was of the opinion that a 4-speed corncob freewheel was functionally almost a singlespeed anyway.

Gunnar- do you still have your beautiful McLean?

I recall that being a real beauty as well.

Someday I'll find one in my size........

Gunnar Berg 03-14-14 08:24 AM

I still have the '82 McLean. (Also a 1978? Galmozzi.) The rest are U.S. built. Here's some pictures I should take some more pictures, a couple have moved on and there some new ones are not included or have noticibly changed.

I'd like to eventually find a 58/59cm touring McLean, but that may not even exist.

Wow, now that's a stable.

Top quality all the way through.

So Chris Kvale did the paint on your McLean.

I didn't know that till I read the detailed description in your photo presentation.

What a striking finish.

Just a perfect bicycle. imho

rootboy 03-14-14 10:41 AM

Yes. What a nice collection, Gunnar.

Gunnar Berg 03-14-14 01:53 PM

Thank you. I certainly didn't start out with intention of having "a collection".

None of us do, Gunnar. None of us do. But then, "n+1" kicks in and, before we even realize it, we become the vintage bike equivalents of the Crazy Cat Lady. :twitchy:

Gunnar Berg 03-14-14 02:27 PM

"A collection" would infer a quantity of at least double digits. I suppose if I were honest (and I'm not) I would confess to have at times drifted dangerously close to that threshold.

My wife has made a reasonable request.

While we have two boys in college keep the number to six bicycles.

You can bet I am doing some fierce maneuvering before the eldest starts in the fall.

...and she never said anything about bicycles at the cabin. :)

I suspect that there are many Significant Others who would beg to differ. Not that I think you're wrong, mind you, but such SO's would not listen to either of us.

That kind of "in-house" lawyering can make you more acquainted with how comfortable a place to sleep your couch is (or isn't) than you may wish to know. Jus' sayin'
