Swiss Bottom Bracket Ball Bearings

Do Swiss bottom brackets use 1/4" or 6mm ball bearings?

I am wondering about the bottom bracket on my 83 Peugeot PFN10.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Swiss made or Swiss thread. In any case, just about all bearing balls used on bicycles are imperial size, so most likely 1/4"

Should be a French, Stronglight made (They usually did not put any brand marks on them), Swiss threaded BB on that 83 PSV....
Other than the Swiss threading, there's nothing unusual about the BB, so 1/4" bearings should work.

I mean Swiss thread. I had thought my bottom bracket to be English thread because a Shimano cup would start to thread on but stopped. I did not try to force it any further. Since then I have read that is a common characteristic of a Swiss threaded bottom bracket.

An ad for some Swiss threaded cups on ebay said that it came with caged 6mm bearings. There is not a big difference between 6mm and 1/4" but it probably makes a difference in a bearing.

As you point out it's a small difference. Given typical cup/cone BB design, there's a very good chance that the same BB could work with either, the difference being the rolling track.

If still not sure, buy either ball, take the spindle and cup and "paint" the ball tracks with a dry marker. Assemble in your hand and rpotate the spindle pressing fairly hard. Take apart and spot the ball track by the line left. If it's centered fairly well in the ground area you have the right balls.

Pretty much 100% sure that all pre-1985 Peugeot PSV had Swiss threaded BB shells....

This is a PFN10, but is probably the same.

Oh, sorry, I did not notice that, I read it wrong, I thought it was a "PSN" which was a variant of the PSV.
I agree with you. If the 83 PFN had Vitus tubing and BCM lugs, it would most likely be Swiss threaded too....

I'm sure that the seller just mis-measured.
