Bolt through DT mounts...
Where would one find these if they had a frameset that used them and no longer had them?
|
Bolt-through? 'Splain please. Clamp-on, brazed-on, or ??

Cannondale or other large DT frame? If so, I may have one of those in my parts bin.

I believe he is talking about nutserts which are basically a pop rivet with threads in the center. Many aluminum bikes have used them for water bottle cage mounts. The tool and the nutsert is available many places like hardware stores (not big box stores) and even Harbor Freight. Roger

Is this for downtube shifters? That is what the Cannondale reference was talking about. The nutserts are normally for mounting a waterbottle cage.

Nova Cycles Supply has a lever boss kit that bolts through the frame & epoxies to the downtube. I used a set last year to replace the broken bosses on my Nishiki ONP.

Both Cannondale and Trek (and possibly others) anchored downtube mounted lever bosses on their aluminum frames with a threaded rod that passed entirely through the downtube. The Nova part straightblock mentioned could be a usable replacement, but might require some modification.

Whats the big secret? If we have the brand and year of the frame this would certainly be easier. Someone may have the parts to give you but without the frame data it is not possible to help. Also PLEASE do not quote me it is one more thing I have to clear out of my profile. Roger

Ran into this on my aegis carbon frame. It had a moving shifter boss when I got it. After some research and a closer look, I sawThere was a tiny flathead screw in there. Some two part epoxy and some masking tape later and it hasn't moved in a thousand or so miles.
P.sure I found the part on loose screws or something like that. I know cannondale used two nuts on a length of threaded rod. |
You have to pin down what brand and model bicycle you have to determine which bolt through DT shifter bosses you need to find, as the concave bushings or shifter boss bases will need to have the correct concave radius to match up to the frame's DT. Another brand that I believe have not been mentioned that uses this type of DT shifter boss mount is Vitus. They used it on their "Carbone" frames, and I think on their aluminum 979 and 992 frames too. If the frame is a Vitus, a set of the bolt through shifter, had been posted on eBay for auction on and off in the last few months.....

I gave my son a Cannondale that was like that. He suffered a broken frame with it so transferred all the parts to a Sekai frame. I drilled a hole in downtube, had to shorted the bolt as the donor bike was large tube aluminum. I made hard rubber bushings to compensate for tube size difference.
I believe the donor was a 400, had the strange rear dropouts, and aluminum fork. |
my brothers Raleigh Technium Pre is set up with these, the apoxy broke loose during a 35 mile training ride.. that was a fun ride home

I too am wondering why there's reluctance from the OP to divulge what model and brand bicycle he is looking bolt-through shifters for:twitchy::twitchy:.... Thsi thread could be shortened to just a couple of responses if he only shared that information from the start......

Looks like the bosses on an early Giant Cadex

Same frame from my build a bike threads, trying to avoid influencing component choices still. Oh and funny enough, I may actually have the part in question.. I've often wondered what a few rods I have laying around from a bike expo years back were.
