Removing Brake Levers
I am attempting to remove the Dia Compe (aero) "Aero Compe" levers from the handlebars and cant figure out how to loosen the mounting band/clamps. Which also means I dont know how to tighten them. :)
They can be budged a bit but they certainly arent loose. What am I not seeing here?? |
|
I get this foreboding sense I should not have messed with these. :) |
If they are the levers I think you have, then look through the slot in the front of the lever. You should see an allen head. Wrench slips through the slot. I recall answering this question years ago and found the photos I took to illustrate.'
EDIT: LOL....I just followed the link posted by oddjob2. And there is my response....wow eight years ago. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7124/1...b629dc46_o.jpg P3021640 by CV6Enterprises, on Flickr http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7365/1...ea46c3d4_o.jpg P3021641 by CV6Enterprises, on Flickr |
I may just throw them out and get the money out for new ones. I did the Bozo no-no and removed the screws that removes the spring on both. Not good. Oh well.

It can be put back. It is not easy.
Tektro. |
It's easier than you think to put that spring back in, iirc. I recently did it, and I'm known as 'Mittens' in some circles. There is a set screw which secures the pin which holds the lever to the body. It's under the pin, I believe. Loosen the set screw, remove the pin, remove the lever, install the spring, and away you go.
And if you really want to throw them away, I'll happily take them off your hands. |
Don't loose the little domed aluminum cable housing ferrules.
They are nice levers. I would not throw them away. CV-6, I dig the 45th ID avatar. Awesome. |
Somewhere on the long 15ft journey to the shop various little parts are on the ground in the ice and snow. I'll keep the levers in the parts box but they wont grace the Criterium build.

Sad. I've been there countless times myself.
 |
I learned how to replace that spring by doing the same thing you did.
|
For those that had the spring fall out, here is a tip on replacing that little stinker:
