I believe I have seen the light... have decided that I will be selling off or scrapping my collection of steel bicycles in order to pursue the design and development of carbon fibre bicycles, carbon components, and improved ceramic bearings.

Steel bicycles had their day and that day was over 20 years ago... it is really a dead end technology that has no place in the modern cycling world and one must move ahead with the times.

I am heading off to the LBS to scope out the new carbon fibre bicycles.

I am sure some of the hipsters will like some of what I have to offer and will pay big money although I should probably fire up the cut off wheel and remove the derailleur hangers to give those bikes a cleaner look and cut down some of those old handlebars or maybe swap them for flat bars.

Nah, just scrap 'em...

Given the time of year, markets will be down, I'd vote to scrap them too.

I've been giving this some thought too. Give up this whole silly cycling, lycra, etc. And take up a proper sport for my age, golf. Now there is an activity that knows proper attire.

I just traded all my Raleighs for a Next mountain bike. It's not carbon fiber but it does have front and rear suspension.

When you are heaving the scrap (ugly, unrefined, samey, "rusty", "heavy", worthless steeds of a hapily forgotten bygone era of a time, that is best not mentioned) steel your back is sure to give you some grief, just chalk it up to the penance you need to pay for years of stupidity(joke), you could probably throw the shipping cost on the penance list too.
When you are throwing "that R20" in do not be too hard on yourself . . to make your self feel better you could kick it good riddance, for the unworthy boring un technologically un advanced lump of bad welding that it is!!! Just don't cry while doing this. I would.

65er Thank you for the laugh, I was a bit sad for my 5 yr old boy who came home yesterday and told me that he played a (very bad!) joke on a kid in his class, the kid responded by getting angry with Aidan! I explained to Aidan that maybe the boy did not know about April Fools Day.

For my honest thoughts on your collection polar opposite the comments above.

Your bikes gave me a real boost 3 yrs ago post major stomach reconstructive surgery, knowing I had to get fit again I realized I could do that on the rusty old steel bicycle outside, had not ridden a bike in 15 yrs.
I got on the net and starting looking at bike pics and found a pic of your Lenton, then the CCM, then Forest, found this site and the R20 site and Lovely Bicycle, (Thank you Velouria) and BOOM Bicycle Addict was born. I am now working in a bike shop/co op doing sales and marketing, and as much wrenching as I can do, my boss believes my strength to be making him money.
I would like to go for my Mechanics qualification next year. Welding course after that.

+1 It just isn't spontaneous. Many here are quite funny when afforded an opportunity, but AFD just isn't spontaneous.

OK, the Murray Ironman Pro MTB says "Carbon Steel Titanium" on the top tube, right next to the 3 cables running to the rear.
Of course, it also says Triathlon on it. Pound for pound, one of the best values in bikes (about $2/lb).

I got home late, my wife wanted some items printed from my computer.

Choices come down to the Madone 7.9 or the Roubaix SL4 and then there is the SRAM vs Dura Ace vs Campagnolo thing... sad thing is... I am not any faster on these than I am on my vintage Cooper but maybe that had something to do with the weather and the fact neither of these wonderbikes can take a studded tyre.















Maybe I should just stick to steel.

I've been watching the Ronovo sie for a while. Wish I had one of the Appalachain series, hickory and maple, mmm good! Can't see spending that kind of dough though.
