Best brake pads for smooth aluminum rims

I'll be installing new brake pads in my 1987-ish Shimano 105 short reach caliper brakes. See: http://velobase.com/ViewGroup.aspx?G...5-51dd364b43c4

The rims are new Sun CR-18, these aluminum rims have a satin finish. Unlike most modern rims they do not have a machined brake track.

Any suggestions for high performance modern pads for mostly dry weather?

All kool stop branded stuff, specifically the salmon or reds but I have used there blacks, yellows, and blues all to great usage. But if they're virgin, Salmons then reds would be my choice. I also have cr18 rims on three different bikes and have used them for years.

Looks as if those brakes don't use the replaceable cartridges that are readily available now. Be interested in what you find that fits, especially Koolstops. thanks.

You've been here for over eight years and you have to ask?

Tough to beat salmon koolstops.

Most of my rides are flat enough that dragging a shoe might suffice.

kool stops should use the same motto.

I just use these on my dry-weather bike.

$6.31 a pair and look great on those 105 brakes, Shimano BR-6403

Amazon.com: Shimano Non-Cartridge Pad Set: Sports & Outdoors

I run Salmon Continentals on my wet bikes, although they look kinda clunky.

I have some very similar Jagwire pads. If you come on Saturday they are yours for free.

Barrettscv 04-13-14 04:07 PM

Thanks. Yes, I'll be there along with two or more from Chicago.

Grand Bois 04-13-14 05:44 PM

The cheap Jagwire X pads provide excellent braking.
