cassette and freehub help

I'm not up on this stuff, so I need some help. I bought a set of wheels off ebay, campagnolo hubs, and a freebody. I then purchased a campy 9 speed cassette off paceline forum. Well they dont fit, and I'm not exactly sure what the freehub body is. It doesnt thread on like a shimano. If anyone has what I need, I will trade both the shimano and unknown to me freehub for the correct campy 9 speed freehub.

This is the freehub that came on the wheels..

Looks like a EXA 8s hub and a 9s cassette.

I just found out. It is an 8 speed cassette. Now the question, will a nice speed freehub fit on the campy hub that i have and fit the cassette i have? thanks

Watch out for Shimano and Campy incompatiblity issues when working freehubs and cassettes.

I'm using all campy. I just showed the shimano incase someone wanted to deal.

Since you already have all the parts, it looks to me that it would be possible to modify the 9-speed cassette splines to fit onto the 8-speed hub body. OD of the spline pattern is same for both, the 9-speed pattern had smaller ID so you would need to file/grind away some of the spline until it fits the 8-speed body. No idea or firsthand knowledge as to if the resulting spline would be strong enough for long-term reliability!

Looks as if a 9-speed spline pattern body swap is also possible though campy utilized different size axles and you would need to match the new body to your existing axle size, so beware that not all 9-speed bodies will work.

Short answer---no. Longer answer, it can be done, but you need an early 9s freehub, like a Veloce, which are tough to come by in good condition. That is not an 8s cassette, BTW. You may only have 8 cogs, but the spline pattern is 9s/10s.

Like I said, if you can find a very early 9s Mirage (not Veloce, bad memory) hub, you can swap out the freehub and it will fit on your old shell...maybe. Is yours a Record/Chorus hub, or lower?

chorus. I really wasnt sure what i was getting. I didnt think their was a difference. The ebay add was listed as 8,9,10 speed wheelset.Guess i should of asked someone before i bought them.

sloar 04-15-14 04:06 PM

Looks like I will either sell or trade them. Thanks for the info.

RobbieTunes 04-15-14 07:25 PM

OK, looks like a mess; if a deal goes through for me, I'll have some 9/10 Campy wheels.
I'll PM you because I'm waiting on two different parties to fish or cut bait.

jiangshi 04-15-14 08:32 PM

I have OP's laced to Record hubs if you are looking, or a set of OP's laced to Chorus hubs.
