Maiden Voyage with my 82 SuperSport SP

Steve Witlatch and I rode miles today down the fox river. The super sport Sp maiden voyage! Just need a better saddle!

Rides great.

It is a beauty. The bike looks even better in person.

Yours is a splendid bike which gives an assured responsive ride.

I've had my 25" Champion No. 2 framed (they were all No. 1 except the 25") '82 Super Sport S/P nine nine years now, and it's the favored among its brethren, the '84 Miyata 610 and '83 Centurion Pro Tour 15.

Very nice. Were the '82 Super Sport SPs made in Chicago or imported from Japan or Tawain?

Just add, fenders, paniers and bags, and you are ready for a trip around North America!

Made by Panasonic in Japan. Sport touring geometry. Beautifully crafted frame sets. Both Super Sport and Super Sport S/P models had the same full chro-moly frame and fork. Difference was the trim level--crank, freewheel, derailers and shifters.

Racks were an option. Mine came with none--so it bears a proud Pletscher rear spring rack of honor in memory of days as a newsboy past. The OP's original racks are a thing of beauty, IMHO.

So in many respects, they are in the same heritage as the World Voyageur and Voyageur II made by Panasonic in the mid '70s for Schwinn. I finally got my '75 Voyageur II on the road and I'm very happy with the couple of shakedown rides I've taken it on so far. I equipped mine with similar racks that are on @jjhabbs. I pulled my racks off a wrecked Voyageur 11.8.

What are your build specs on it?

I see the aero water bottle (I bet those are hard to find these days).

My 1984 Voyageur SP is interesting in that it's a Japanese made Schwinn with a completely Shimano-Free build.

What do you mean by build specs? The Aero water bottle was stock on this bike and was still on it.

The bike is stock except the Technomic stem and handlebars. I know its not the right saddle of course. Tires are new. Drivetrain, brakes, wheels, racks post HS cranks etc are all stock.

Is that with the cool original Deore components?

Just out of curiosity- the crankset- the catalog says "Shimano Tourney AD" do the arms have Takagi forged on the back? I recall reading that Takagi had been bought out by Shimano, and (maybe) coincidentally Shimano used to have a "Tourney" partial group.

Its possible you were looking at the wrong specs. This is the SP model. THe bike with the Tourney AD cranks I believe was the Voyageur sp a couple years later.

I have (1) an '82 S/P original Aero water bottle/mounting and (2) a second Aero water bottle NOS in the box.

The first came with the '82 S/P, the second wished its way into my stash via an early on depth of winter ebay snipe.

Both date from when I held keeping the bike original as sacred as any holy relic. Since then it's acquired a Technomic stem, Nitto B177 46cm bars, Kool Stop Dura Ace style shoes and salmon pads up front and Salmons rear, 36 spoke Dyad wheels and 700cx35mm tires, Shuntour custom spaced cassette, Command shifters, 48/38/28 rings, new bottom bracket bearings, (token) Campy downtube cable stops, an XC Comp rear derailer, cables and casing, a Brooks B17 and a 'Pletscher' rear rack. Needless to say, it's no longer being treated as a relic, rather it's my favorite daily ride.

Should the opportunity arise, I would gladly and giddily entertain the thought of the trade of either or both Aero bottles for a rear rack such as pictured in the OP.

Yes- I mixed up the VSP and the SS SP. The "Schwinn Catalogs" website has the text from the catalog rewritten under the catalog product scans.
They're both really special bikes and outfitted for "business."

I'm finding my VSP to be the bike I gravitate towards.
