Can we get a few more photos (drive side, details, points of attachment, decals, etc)? We don't have much to go on. The top tube cable guides look like what are on my peugeot. That's about all I can see in the picture that points that direction.

I sent them and email and got some photos back. They arent much better.
I figured that the paint job would be a tell. it looks like there isnt one sticker on it from the photos.
Thanks for your help

Its a repainted frankenbike

ianpaschal 05-14-14 02:02 PM

Yeah, as far as I can tell that's a custom paint job. Is there no SN on the bottom bracket to look at?

For future reference, these two websites are good places to try and match a Peugeot:

1. Cycles Peugeotl

2. Cycles Rétro-Peugeot

I have seen this part and paint compliment on several pugs
I can send another email to get maybe a serial
like half of their fleet in the late 80's and early 90's had 2 tone gradient paint
2 sets of braze-ons
top cable routing
lugged frame
maybe cinelli stem and bar combo
and its supposed to be quite light for steel

Meaningless, I've never seen a decent bike where they didn't say this.

Yes, although not like yours. They were bright colours, and featured large PEUGEOT text on the drop tube, and cheesy paint scribble graphics on the seat and top tubes (which I am actually working on replicating on a '90 Peugeot right now). As I recall, this trend started in '88 or '89, everything before that used the very sexy red-orange-yellow bands. By '91 or '92 the 2-tones were phased back out in favour of solid colours.

So I can say with near 100% certainty that that is a home-done paint job, which unless you plan on stripping and replacing with the accurate paint scheme, really ruins the value of the bike, IMO.

Ok here are some more photos
it is for sure a stock paint job
the only other possibility is that it is not a pug
look at the stamps on the components
headset lockring is stamped frame is stamped SIMPLEX. paint chips go straight to metal

Whatever it is... the frame is a bit older than '90. By '90 most companies had move to a unicrown fork and a more vertical dropout. The components, although not all if any original to the frame look more like '86/'87

Where the paint chips go has nothing to do with it being stock. All it means is that whoever repainted it put a tiny bit of effort into it. When I paint a bike, the paint chips also go to metal because I took a weekend to take the old paint off first.

Regarding the "for sure", well, I can tell you that it "for sure" is not a stock paint job. If you can find a single document/scanned catalogue page I will admit to having been completely wrong, but I doubt it, because I've looked through a LOT of Peugeot catalogues.

Here are some examples of what you're referring to:

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=380523http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=380524

You'll notice several differences:

1. Brighter colours.
2. Only 2 areas of colour. Yours uses one top tube area, then fade to tone #2 , then back to #1 at the BB. No stock paint job does that.
3. MISSING THE HUGE PEUGEOT LOGO ON THE DROP TUBE.
4. Also missing the the headset emblem.

Again, if you can find ANY evidence that it's a stock paint job, I would fully concede but I am certain that this is not.

My diagnosis still "frankenbike".

designation 05-15-14 12:49 AM

All of the stickers are missing
that is why i was reaching out
there is one still on the seat tube simply the sticker lion

I will concede that it may not be stock peugeot paint
i still think the bike is
i can decal it the way it is or i could have it powder coated i guess
i would hate to be wrong in either scenario

if i can pin down a year of any kind or confirm in anyway other than the sticker that its a pug then ill move on the project
Im really hoping a certain mega fan will come up with the correct answer

Now that I think about it, I also don't recall seeing any lugged Peugeots after 1989-ish. And before that, there are absolutely zero bikes with this paint scheme.

Perhaps someone with a better eye for lugs can use them to confirm that it's a Peugeot, but if the decal on top of the home made paint scheme was put on DIY as well, then I actually don't see any reason the bicycle is a Peugeot at all. Anyone can repaint it and stick a decal on.

The SN I see doesn't look like most of the Peugeot SNs I've seen. They tend to be far longer:

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=380525

My last Peugeot I bought had the SN: Y003 34957.

I might be totally wrong about this and it's just a repainted Peugeot, but I don't actually see that strong of an indication its Pug-ness.

If you are going to do work on it, regardless if you powder coat it or rattle can it, strip the old paint off first. It will very quickly turn to garbage if you try to do decals and more clear layers on top of the old-not-so-mint paint job.

I don't think I've ever seen a lugged Peugeot with that paint job. I've also not seen, or been aware of many Peugeots that used Bocama lugs. I found one reference about a Vitus 172 bike with bocama lugs. The fastback seat stays don't really point to a Peugeot of the age of anything with Vitus 172.

Yay! That was my suspicion but I don't have a good enough eye/deep enough knowledge of specific makes of lugs to confirm it. Thank you for the confirmation! :D
