1980 Raleigh Comp GS questions...

On this new to me (Japan manufactured) model...

1. Is it customary (stock) to have foam type handlebar covering?

2. Is this the stock stand alone brake lever accompaniment (without an additional soft hood covering) as depicted?

TIA

I's like to hear from someone who knows for sure. I bought foamy aftermarket grips for my '73 Bonneville m'cycle back in the early eighties (to reduce some of the vibration), but I wasn't really following new bicycles at the time.

Good thing that the manufacturers of these grips found other applications for their product... We have made them fabulously rich by using it to protect the frames on old bikes we shuttle back and forth to each other!

Bar foam is on the same lines as the ever popular traffic flags were in the 70's

What did you learn from the catalogs on-line? What do the on-line photos show?

Wow a Cat-Eye CC-1000! Been kinda looking for one!

You should have black cloth bar tape and gum Weinmann hoods, IIRC.

Also, I believe 1980's were England built.

Nothing conclusive, as 1980 catalogs are rather elusive it seems.

https://www.kurtkaminer.com/TH_raleigh_catdata.html

On-line Googled pics, the same.

Then I may be off on the year, as it HAS a Made in Japan sticker on the seat tube.

Are you needing the whole unit or just the ring gizmo?

PM me if you want just the ring. It's yours.

About that time things are a bit foggy for me, but to the very best of my recollection the Competition was never built in Japan, at least during my tenure. I'll see if I can dig up a catalog. I've one sitting beside me, but no date... I'm guessing '74 or '75, but I don't know. The Competition in the catalog has some noticeable differences just with respect to the frame.

Just remember, this is a Comp GS (Gran Sport), verses a full blown "Competition".

Also...

I would have guessed maybe white tape, if taped (not foam) at all.

The brake levers are Campy, if that has any "hood" bearing.

I should take a better pic of them.

I did note that, and don't recollect it. As I said, that period is more than a bit foggy in my memory.

Great bike, btw. New seat, tape and hoods and it will be a pretty swell ride. Those early 80's Japanese Raleighs were pretty swell. Had an '82 Super Course go through my hands. Very nice build and components.

Ta da!

And yes, the saddle is already history. Will opt for a Brooks "Pro", or similar before I'm done.

And these DO need hoods?

OK, that confirms not made in England (It doesn't have 'Nottingham'). Funny (well not, actually) I have no recollection of this bike, nor do I know what precipitated it being made in Japan rather than at the Carlton operation. This was at the end of my tenure with Raleigh.

Any chance you have more detailed pictures of the rest of the bike and it's decals?

The chrome rear socks on that bike don't look long enough to be a Competition GS.

Many Japanese bikes that were built for in country use, non export, had those type of foam on the bars. My Bridgestone Radac had them with the cables on the outside of the foam.

I think after 1980 they were made in Japan, they even had the Reynolds 531 sticker on them. Also they Should be equiped with the later Campagnolo Grand sport Groupo.

They were, 531 stickers on the seat-tube and forks, //////// on the Badge, and very fine workmanship and finish; at least compared to the previous years Nottingham work.
