1980 Raleigh Comp GS questions...
On this new to me (Japan manufactured) model...
1. Is it customary (stock) to have foam type handlebar covering?
2. Is this the stock stand alone brake lever accompaniment (without an additional soft hood covering) as depicted?

I's like to hear from someone who knows for sure. I bought foamy aftermarket grips for my '73 Bonneville m'cycle back in the early eighties (to reduce some of the vibration), but I wasn't really following new bicycles at the time.
Good thing that the manufacturers of these grips found other applications for their product... We have made them fabulously rich by using it to protect the frames on old bikes we shuttle back and forth to each other!

You should have black cloth bar tape and gum Weinmann hoods, IIRC.
Also, I believe 1980's were England built.

About that time things are a bit foggy for me, but to the very best of my recollection the Competition was never built in Japan, at least during my tenure. I'll see if I can dig up a catalog. I've one sitting beside me, but no date... I'm guessing '74 or '75, but I don't know. The Competition in the catalog has some noticeable differences just with respect to the frame.

Just remember, this is a Comp GS (Gran Sport), verses a full blown "Competition".
Also...
I would have guessed maybe white tape, if taped (not foam) at all.
The brake levers are Campy, if that has any "hood" bearing.
I should take a better pic of them.

Great bike, btw. New seat, tape and hoods and it will be a pretty swell ride. Those early 80's Japanese Raleighs were pretty swell. Had an '82 Super Course go through my hands. Very nice build and components.

OK, that confirms not made in England (It doesn't have 'Nottingham'). Funny (well not, actually) I have no recollection of this bike, nor do I know what precipitated it being made in Japan rather than at the Carlton operation. This was at the end of my tenure with Raleigh.

Any chance you have more detailed pictures of the rest of the bike and it's decals?
The chrome rear socks on that bike don't look long enough to be a Competition GS.

Many Japanese bikes that were built for in country use, non export, had those type of foam on the bars. My Bridgestone Radac had them with the cables on the outside of the foam.

I think after 1980 they were made in Japan, they even had the Reynolds 531 sticker on them. Also they Should be equiped with the later Campagnolo Grand sport Groupo.
