Slotted cleats with float!

So one of my friends is a pretty talented mechanical engineer, and over the past two years he has been designing a slotted cleat with float for mass production. He is just about to fire up a Kickstarter and hopefully get the first batch going.

I rode prototypes during the 2013 L'Eroica, and all I can say is that the things are amazing.

Looks like a promising product for a very small segment of the cycling public. I hope it is versitle enough to use on the variety of cleated shoes as well as clipless.

You should solicit the owners of Vintage ride sites, ie. L'Eroica, etc. to see if you can add a link to your website. I bet there would be a lot of interest.

That is awesome, I can't ride long distance with slotted cleats without pain. I wouldn't buy a set because I am committed to clipless for long distance, but I am sure there is a market, though relatively small, for this product. Well done.

He is going to L'Eroica this year, so I know he is trying to work something out along those lines.

The cleat is set up to work with the standard 3 bolt pattern you find on a modern road shoe, and it looks really nice on the modern retro style shoes made by Vittoria and Giro. Right now I am using them on a pair of carbon Specialized Pro's, but I plan on buying a pair of the lace up Giro's pretty soon.

I also think the market is small, but I'll be all over 'em if they do come to market.

All my slotted cleats have float, more if I am using steel pedals which are thinner than aluminum.
The only cleats I have that do not are Cinelli Uniblock cleats that fill the entire open space of a period Campagnolo pedal.

By that I presume you mean you contour your cleats by custom filing the slots?

The Kickstarter is live.

For anyone who makes the $500 pledge, the ride is really nice and the lunch stop is fantastic. I was there last year.

Where is he with this idea. Will they be available by the summer?

Kactus 01-10-15 06:35 PM

That's a great idea! I do agree with those who say it's a small market (people who still use cleats and get pain from their use) and this could make it difficult to keep prices reasonable. Hopefully everything works out for your friend.

They add instant value to a lot of Shimano and older toe clip pedals.
Even for me.

I remember slotted cleats that offered float back in the 80s that had a bow-tie shaped slot. Worked pretty good too. I guess I'm having a pre-senior moment as I can't remember what they were called...
