I've been on the hunt for an 89 for a while now, and I've finally landed one that's still original down to the tires. The two that I had stumbled on previously were missing the stem with the bottle mounts; or various other parts. I'll post more when it's cleaned up, but for now, here is the last piece of the puzzle to complete the entire production run, 1985-1989.

I bought my 85 Cimarron a few years ago as a "beater" bike, set it up with drop bars, and ended up liking it so much that it has become my go-to bike for pretty much every kind of riding.









I liked it so much that I bought it a younger sibling.

Man, you're good! That's exactly where that was taken. Burger King is to my right. It's where I meet a friend of mine that commutes from the same area. I take the path for the first 7 miles of my commute that ultimately takes me to RSM. There have been a couple of really nice Cimarrons on CL lately; keep your eyes peeled. You wont regret it. I absolutely love my commuter.

Just out of curiosity- what's the weight difference between the Cimarron and the High Sierra?

I know that area pretty good.
I take main from orange to Irvine and sometimes hop on that trail.

After I read this thread I immediately checked CL there was one cimarron an 88 for
close to $500. To pricey for me.
I would love an 85-87 the chrome fork looks a little flashy to me. Kind of looks like the circuit

my 89 arrived; thankfully the seller took the time to pack it well. It's in great, all original shape, and should clean up beautifully. More pics will follow after I do the clean-up, test ride, and install all 5 bottle cages.....lol

If I rode my High Sierra more, I'd really consider going after a Cimarron. I really love the idea of them- the "fillet brazed in the front, lugged in the back" business to them.

Of course, I passed on that 85 that looked to be in great shape for $175 locally.

Any noticeable geometry differences through the years?
I've had a few high sierras pass through my hands and have seen variations between same size frames.

Schwinn apparently redesigned the Cimarron, High Sierra and Sierra frames for '87. They went from having 70 degree head and seat tube angles and a 42.75" (1085mm) wheelbase (21" frame) in '85-'86 to a 70 degree head combined with a much less layed back 72.5 degree seat tube and also a longer 43.5" (1106mm) wheelbase but with apparently shorter chainstays for improved climbing in '87 and up.

This information came from the consumer catalogs as well as the Schwinn Eagle dealer newsletter dated October '86, however the actual change may have occurred during the '86 model year according to some bikes I've seen. Since bconneraz has Cimarrons from every year it would be interesting to measure them to document more exactly when the change took place.

Here's an '88 Cimarron for sale, it looks to be pretty much original and unmolested plus the $250 asking price is reasonable: Classic 1987 Schwinn Cimarron Mountain Bike



Note that the seller is incorrect about the model year, I can't see the badge no. but the A8xxxxx serial dates the frame to Jan. '88:

Here's the 89 all cleaned up. The bike is in fantastic condition; ridden for sure, but not much, and the bike appears to have been well cared for.
