Whizzers are cool. During the war when gas was rationed, lots of factory workers used them to commute to work.

I love this stuff.
I adapted a small 2 cycle lawnmower engine to my Sting-Ray style bike when I was in junior high, 1967. The engine had a belt centrifugal clutch feeding a 10" belt pully at the bottom bracket, across to a small sprocket made from a rear cog, feeding a chain to the rear wheel which mounted a large sprocket made from a front chain-wheel. All of the parts were welded by my older brother who was in high-school metal shop. It was scary as hell to ride, in the grass field across the street. My stupid friend was stopped by the local cop doing 35 on the street. |

There was also a belt driven Norton 850 Commando but I didn't take a picture of that; but I think my buddy did so I will see if I can get his pictures as well. Then either post a link or post them here.

I had two Whizzers when i was a youngster in the 1950's. One like in the picture - they were built on a Schwinn paper-boy bike - and a smaller framed Whizzer "Sportsman". Even then. parts were no longer available and the engines broke a lot, worst case, throwing the con rod. The engines were actually designed and first built in the 1930's. Mine would bury the needle on its bike speedometer (it said 45 mph). The cops would love to catch kids back then on unlicensed motorized contraptions of any kind - crime of the century I guess. You could remove the drive belt and pedal it like a regular bike and put the belt back on when you got to a nice private road. Modern replica Whizzers were available a few years ago, but I guess they found people were not willing to pay the nearly $3,000 price they had to ask.

This Vincent rolled in just as I was leaving, really nice age appropriate patina.
