Pronunciation Question of the Day!

How do you pronounce NITTO? Just put a NITTO stem and bar on a bike, someone asked me about them, and I said they were:

1. Knit toe

2. Nye toe

3. ???

Thank you in advance for the answer that will allow me to demonstrate my vast knowledge of things C & V!!!!

rootboy 07-05-14 06:51 AM

I say Neat-oh. Which is undoubtedly wrong.

That is how I learned to say it

Sorry. It's an old joke.

How the Japanese pronounce it is only an issue when you're speaking Japanese. When speaking English go with what you think will get the idea across best. IMHO that's nit-tow. If you're really worried about it, order it on line where pronunciation and grammar don't matter didly.

I don't think I've ever spoken the word Nitto, but in my head I say the "ni" similar to nitwit.

The Golden Boy 07-05-14 10:53 AM

I say knit-o, tang-gy, and dee-ah comp.

I do call them "gyros" and I say "for all intensive porpoises" and refer to elevators as escalators and say "I'm out of here like a prom dress" and ask if the Bear is Catholic.

Like stink on rice.

It's Nee Toe, and if you are interested, Nikon is Nee Con

Reminds me of my Bikecology days, when we would get free repeat radio ads whenever disk jockey Wolfman Jack mispronounced Nishiki. Of course, my Japanese-literate elder son tells me most Americans mispronounce it, as well, by emphasizing the middle syllable, but at least they don't say, "Neshersky" or something like that.

rootboy 07-05-14 11:03 AM

Yes. But I always called my cameras Nye-kon. And still do. I'm a 'mercan. I mis-pronounce nearly everything. Except Nitto, apparently.

Drives me a little nuts when I hear how most people on the radio pronounce Tokyo…. Toe-kee-oh.

Here in San Diego were hear a lot of "Ti-a-wana," so I guess extra syllables are a multiple language problem.

I say that as well- but in a little more coarse terms.

That's the way the cookie bounces.

It really takes a lot of thought to say this stuff "wrong."

vjp 07-05-14 11:56 AM

I am a 30 year Nikon user and until I lived in Tokyo I had no idea that it was pronounced differently than Nye-kon and personally I still refer to them as Nye-kon and so do the Nikon reps in N.A.

Interesting.

On a side note, I believe La Jolla is indeed pronounced la jolla.

Think I'm going with this.....Thanks all. Ironically, 10 minutes after my post someone stopped by and bought the knee toe equipped bike!
Now I have no knee toes!
