The Strangest Thing I Found Today.....

Figured I would start a thread for the odd things we come across. Be it on the road, found on bikes or whatever. I'll start. Below is a homebrew solution to fix an old Suntour Mountech derailleur. This came to me on a mid-80's mountain bike I picked up recently. Pretty cool repair.

That's against the law, probably coming under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Secret Service. Although I'm not the coin police.

I bet that wasn't a field repair.

I think you're safe;

Let's see, 1965. Weren't quarters still made of silver in 65?

And, why did he use a period incorrect part? That quarter is at least , what?….ten to 15 years older than the derailleur. Sheesh.

I have a Mountech II GTL, which apparently was the third iteration of that derailleur & fixed the problem that they had. Would love to have another one, as the cage is a bit loose at the rivets.

Ha! That gave me a chuckle. Saved to the HDD.
Whatever keeps it running, is a good thing.

I have a LeTech on an Expedition, similar design, but without the troublesome Mountech pulley.

I haven't taken mine completely apart, so what's the purpose of that quarter? Isn't there a spring in there?

No, 90% silver through 1964, but copper-nickel ever since.

I believe the quarter is serving as the upper jockey wheel. Seems like it would have been easier to find a new wheel. Then again it probably would have cost more than a quarter.

That looks like it took a fair bit of effort.

@due route - I believe the jockey wheel is behind the plate where the quarter is, but maybe can't see it. There's a thread with a partial tear down of this derailleur here:

This is a "found on the road" thread? Great!
I'm always stopping for crap I see on the road side, I slow down to scan piles of trash. The most unusual thing I have found has been a Van Briggle vase, actually a fairly rare variety, 1930's era.

I didn't exactly find this on the road. It was staring up out of the mud at me 30' underwater.

It's about the creepiest thing you've ever seen. It has eyes, nostrils and even a part in the hair. My wife thinks it's cursed.

No, 1964 was the last year for silver save the Kennedy Half Dollar that was a silver/nickel/silver sandwich till 1967 at least.
I find one or two silver coins a year now, sold off most of mine when buyers were paying 18X face. Thank you Hunt Brothers.

Thankfully it was not sitting upon a fence post waiting to be shot at for target practice.

Where were you when you found it? Any idea what its origin is? Creepy!
