Sugino AT AsymmetricalSpindle

A friend has a nice old Sugino AT triple crank he wants to install on an old Centurion. His LBS told him that he would have to acquire a special asymmetrical spindle, a Sugino MT 68 to make the installation work. Is the LBS correct?

According to Sheldon Brown, a 127.5 bottom bracket with a 2mm spacer on the drive side will work.

If your friend lives near a bike co-op, they likely have asymmetrical bb spindles (ask me how I know this-:roflmao2:)

I have a couple of those cranksets and can confirm that yes, you do need the asymmetric spindle. As mentioned above it's possible to substitute a symmetric spindle and live with the left crank arm set further out, but I wouldn't recommend that since AT cranks have a large 'q-factor' to begin with. Good luck with the search.
