Wearing a helmet I presume :thumb:

How about a recent photo of the bike?

I'm so proud.

The bike is holding up well, after a year of high school duty. A tough life, but it still looks a million times better than when I bought it off CL. This summer I'll give it a good servicing.

Thanks for sharing this John. Great news that your son is still riding, and obviously enjoying the bike.

My son's PX has survived another semester of high school, pretty much unscathed. He's added a pannier to carry lock and lunch, it is ziptied to the rack, and I added some blue retroreflective tape on fenders.

Tonight I went to watch a rehearsal of the high school play that my son is in. Afterwards, he and I rode home together. So this is a father-and-son bike photo. His 86 PX in front, my 82 PSV behind.

^Nice. Glad to know he's evaded the thieves another semester, and that at least one of you is "keeping it real" with DT shifters! ;)

That's a cool story and a great pic.

He's growing and the bike will be too small eventually. I think he'll get to 5' 11" or maybe 6'. So I'll be looking for another C&V bike, in the coming year or so. I have a pretty nice PX10 frameset sitting around.

I love this bike and this thread.

Has he taken at all to riding recreationally, or is it primarily just a means of transportation?

jyl 02-10-16 10:54 PM

He has ridden two centuries with me (first one was at 13 y/o, I think). I built him a roadie bike too (74 Raleigh Gran Sport, Campagnolo Veloce 10 speed, Open Pros). We've gone mountain biking too. But, no, he doesn't ride recreationally on any regular basis.

He doesn't really have time. He dances 20 hours a week, sometimes skateboards, and has been working on his upper body (strength is very important for a male dancer, to lift the girls who, while relatively skinny, still weigh 100-130 lb, and for some of the inverted break/hip-hop moves). He has school then dance or theatre rehearsal until 7-9 pm almost every weeknight, on Saturdays he has 5 hours of dance classes, on Sunday he does homework or, when time permits, lays on the couch playing video games.

Right now, the bike is just transportation, that he enjoys.

When he started locking his bike up at school, a couple little things got stolen (a light, etc). But he uses a U-lock, and a heavy chain (left on the rack), and is careful not to leave his bike locked up outside for a long time at night. I remember once he went to a movie with friends and then got worried that his bike was locked in downtown Portland after dark - he called me from the theatre and I drove down there and got the bike.
