Lyotard pedals
 

It seems the ones on the bike I just purchased are loose, especially the drive side, quite a bit of play between the body and spindle so it does not look good. By the way, the dust cap is round with no visible means of removing it, are they pressed on? I would like to keep this Lejeune ( posted elsewhere ) original so any suggestions, perhaps a different Lyotard model? I am surprised they lasted so long, they look to be in pretty good shape otherwise, I would swear a few ball bearings are missing the way it feels.

your description of "the dustcap is round with no visible means of removing it" made me think of the atom 440 so i went back to the pictures of your bicycle. i recalled thinking they were eclair brand back when you began the thread on your new arrival. i still suspect this. do they say lyotard somewhere or is the identification a surmisal on your part?

atom 440 type dustcaps must be grabbed on the edges with a tool such as a channel lock or visegrip. alternatively one can raise the edge at one point with an awl or ice pick and then proceed to lift the cap out.

i would expect eclair pedal parts to be pretty much unobtainium.

I pulled an 60's era Urago out of the trash bin a few years ago and it had many of the same parts as your Lejeune. Long story short, I saved many of the components and tossed the frame. So....I probably have some pedals that may be identical to yours or at least very close. If you're interested, I can take some close up photos so you can compare them. I'm pretty sure they were mounted to a steel, cottered, French-threaded crankset and are complete and in decent shape. Let me know.

Iowegian - thank you for the offer! I would definitely be interested as the bike is not ride able as is - unless one does not care. Let me know what you would like for them. And juvela - I jumped the *** thinking they were Lyotards, should have realized there are other brands such as you mentioned. Such a goof sometimes - when I took a look at the dust cap sure enough, they read Eclair. I will have to check the pedal threads, I read somewhere that most French bikes that were shipped here, during the bike boom anyway, had standard threading. I guess I will find out when I check, I believe they will be 14mm instead of 9/16?

I have a pair of 460D I got, new, in the 80's , they have a Cap which Unscrews to reach the cones and locknuts..

There is an optional alloy dust cap for Lyotards that replaces the screw-on type of the stock pedal (like on a set of 460s). The alloy dust cap snaps in place. You can find them on ebay occasionally. They are a smooth and fairly flat dome compared to the stock dust cap and are rather rare.

Try prying them off, carefully, with something thin, very rigid and not sharp. Like, not a screwdriver. A dull table knife, etc.

Alas, I think my old pedals are gone. I vaguely remember trading them off now but in any case I no longer have them. I do have an old pair of Lyotard quill pedals that are probably of the same vintage and also french-threaded but the ones I was looking for are gone. Sorry about that....

If you want the quill pedals I'd make you a heck of a deal on them ;) but I'm afraid I no longer have any of the rat trap style or any parts that would fit your pedals.

It worked out thankfully, I popped the caps off and disassembled the pedals, the race, cones and bearings still looked serviceable so I cleaned and repacked with grease and adjusted them as well as possible. Both have a bit of play but are much better than they were. I just cannot believe the previous owner let them get so loose. Glad I could still use them - as long as I decide to keep the bike's original components, the only items replaced were the tires some years ago, handlebar tape and brake cables so it is pretty well complete.
